Didn't buy a GTI - Should I be kicking myself?

I'm looking for a MKV GTI at the moment. Preferably white. I found a 2007 model for $34,000 with 22,000 on the clock. Owned by an older couple who were going overseas.

It had no options at all, and was manual.

I test drove it and said I'd call them the next morning. Too late - someone came and bought it.

Did I miss out on an amazing deal?

in my opinion, not at all. that's pretty well priced for a car with no options; if you read the thread on how much people paid for their cars, there are people who bought manual GTIs with no options for around 37k amazingly...

not a rip off either, just saying another one should come your way if you wait / look around

Yeah, it wasnt an overly amazing price for it.

U should go haggle with some dealers and look at the thread "how much did you pay for your golf/jetta" and some of the other threads that have been recently posted, u never know, if u want a base spec model then maybe u can afford a new one???

Nah, don't kick yourself.

When looking at GTIs did you have anything extra in mind, or just stock. It's an average price so you didn't miss out on a bargain.

Also - what did you mean by "older" drivers?

I find that "older" older drivers mostly touch park, grind and hit kerbs, drive over potholes etc. Probably less likely to keep an eye on oil levels and more likely to use ****ty petrol.

Another thing to think about I guess.

In my experience there is always another car equally as good as or better than the one you missed out on no matter how good a deal it may have seemed. Don't dwell on it, these things happen for a reason, something better around the corner.

In principle perhaps yes, but I honestly cant imagine yr typecast "older" driver actually buying a GTI in the first place. i would imagine in this instance they would still own and drive it enthusiatically.

When I'm 100, even my zimmer frame will be lowered and have a turbo on it

Yeah but I'm sure you just hated it when car manufactures changed the gearbox to "R" for forward.

I've actually seen plenty of 'mature' drivers in GTI and TDI cars... makes me laugh a bit because of the stereotypes.

I found another one exactly the same for $37,000 (totally stock with no factory options) in QLD and he'll take $35,000 but not sure if I should hold out for an optioned one...

If I buy from QLD (I live in NSW) does that mean his rego is useless here and I have to pay as soon as I get back to NSW? Will he get a rebate as the car is not being registered again in QLD?

$35k? I am sure you could get it new for $40k drive away. That is only a 12.5% discount for a car that is used, has less warranty and may not include rego. You also have to look at the reason they are getting rid of the car so soon - it may be a lemon and of course they will not tell you that.

Over a year ago when I was looking for cars I saw a second hand GTI with sunroof and DSG for $34k, so $35k for stock is not that great IMO.

might as well use what the dealers do - although the public section is a lot more basic. In my opinion redbook is the "real" end of car sales, and not what sellers want to see. Great if you can get more, but it represents a realistic price.

A quick look shows a 2007 ( before Aug ) 3 door manual GTI with 15k to 22k on the clock should fetch $33,400 to $30,500 in that km range.
Like I said it's the lower end "realistic" sales figure, but it's always interesting to know your redbook tradein, as when I was a car sales guy ( for a brief period ) we all lived by the redbook. I'm sure not much has changed??

Not quite true or a bit of a statement without fact.

It may be easier to get a better price now, with more import volume and the Mk6 around the corner, but even a year ago it was hard to get the kind of discount being thrown around now.
