Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Check engine/exhaust light

upon starting my car this morning I was welcomed with an orange engine light on my dash.
According to my owners manual this refers to a "fault in the exhaust system"
Is this always about an issue in the exhaust? Or is there a possibility that it could be a different engine issue?

No, it's an indication there is an issue with the engine, e.g: a sensor problem, wiring issues, faulty component etc. Best to take it to a dealer or mechanic to scan for the fault code to see what the issue is, it's possible there is also no issue its just popped up a sporadic fault and will only need clearing, but best to scan the vehicle to get it diagnosed asap.

I had the light come on once when we first got our jetta. Turned out to be a faulty sensor in the accelerator pedal box so as the one has said, get it scanned

        Ahh yeah ok!
After about 15 minutes in a carpark the light has turned off...

Am I being too optimistic by thinking I don't have to worry about a thing anymore?

Still get it scanned. The fault code should be logged and you can then work out if it's important or not.

Much better to get it checked out and know what is going on than drive it and cause damage.

Ran a scan last night and found this fault.

However all I can find online about fixing the egr valve is for Diesel engines... Does the fsi engine have one? And if so where is it located?
