Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Black Jetty Build

    Hello,

Bought my 2006 2.0T FSI Jetta four weeks ago and thought I might as well start a thread to see where we end up.

Bit of history, I started out with a 1992 e36 318i (sold to fund an overseas trip) then have been riding a 2012 Hyosung GT250R for like 9 months to save some cash.

After looking at all sorts of cars (e90 325i's, falcon fgs, '99 A4's) I settled on the Jetta due to cheaper rego, massive boot, leather interior, power and with 165k kms it was comparably cheap.

The day I picked her up from a bloke in Brisbane:

        2nd mod:
Headlight replacement. Replaced the original faded headlights with some ebay DRL specials.
Wasn't sure if I would like the look but it's grown on me.

Top stuff! No mucking about hey!
I drove a 2007 jetta a while back and I was pretty impressed with the ride.
That boot is pretty big too

            3rd mod:

            Headunit replacement.
The original head unit had extremely worn buttons. I had read about build quality issues with these models so it wasn't a surprise but still looks out of place in a "premium interior".

I got a direct replacement 8 inch tablet running android. Was skeptical but it's running smoothly and came bluetooth, gps, etc.

I've got a black turbo Jetta as well. They are a great little car and very underrated. Essentially a GTI with a massive boot that comes in extremely handy! Enjoy the car.

Nice Build mate! I have a Shadow Blue Jetta as well!

How is the headunit? how much did you buy it for and I assume you didn't need to upgrade the canbus?

                    Yeah I'm loving it!

Got the headunit from ebay $400 delivered from HAUNG KOHNG, just did a best offer - can give you the member name.
It's great so far, plays all sorts of video formats from DVD, usb, sd card.

GPS works with google maps when I have my phone connected but offline maps (maps with me) doesn't seem to lock on so I will relocate the receiver I think.

Bluetooth connects to phone no worries.

Wifi didn't connect for some reason on DCHP so I had to assign a manual IP but worked afterwards.

They claim 1080p but its really only like 800x400 - not bad as it makes reading things easier while you're driving.
But definitely noticeable once you zoom in on stuff.

It came with one big plug that was similar to what I had already so I just plugged it in and everything worked including steering wheel controls.

Noticed that I had a flat battery after 5 days of not driving the car - not sure if this is related tho, battery is only 7 months old.

The battery drain is a known issue and is due to the canbus. You can update it to a newer model and it should be ok. Normally happens with OEM headunits like the RCD510 pr RNS510. Obviously happens with your aftermarket one too. I think that there is another little unit you can plug in line with the power from the canbus but I cant remember the name at the moment.

As above . With your battery drain as its a 2006 you might need a updated canbus unit. If you installed a vw RCD / RNS unit then defo the flat battery would happen so suspect same with your none genuine head unit. Give us a shout if you need the canbus replaced.

                            Thanks guys,

Yes I have had it disconnected for the past few months and that seemed to have fixed the battery drain issue LOL.

Today the new canbus has arrived from Lithuania (SJ hopefully it fits/works. I got a quote for $350 from a local shop to install and program. They reckon they have to remove the windscreen wipers etc.

However I can access it from the footwell - so if anyone would be keen to program it for me, please PM me (money compensation of course )

Further to this - I still have an old amp and subwoofer from the last car. Tried to sell it the last few month on gumtree with no success. So even tho my gangster days are over I will be installing it once the wiring kit gets here. I don't like the box tho so I want to fit it one either side behind the tail lights. My fibreglass skills are poor so it will remain sliding around in the box for the time being.

Pete from Darkhorse developments a couple of posts above is your man mate. I literally just had mine updated last week by him as I had an RCD510 installed. And yes you are right, it's accessed from the footwell.
