  • Towbar on GT/GTI

I've been looking at getting a new Golf and can't decide between a GT TDI or a GTI, today I was talking to a VW salesperson and she told me that you couldn't fit a towbar to either of these. All the other sales people hadn't mentioned this.
Anyone fitted a towbar to these cars? Seen one fitted?

Has anyone had one fitted aftermarket? I ask this as the towbar is $315 but VW charge $1490 but it needs genuine VW wiring and the Vag com coding.

no reason why you cant mount one. i think ive even seen them mounted on gti's. and yes the wiring is a big fat pain in the ass. if you're gonna get one aftermarket make sure they know what they're doing.

I asked my salesman about a towbar, he quoted me about $1500 including the wiring but I only need it for a bike rack. He said they could do it without the wiring for a 300-400. You can definitely get them done though, seen a couple on various Golf MKV's.

I opted not to bother as I think they need to cut through the bumper, and it ruins the look of the back a bit IMO.

What are you planning on using the towbar for? My salesman recommended roof racks for transporting bikes. There's also frames that you can attach to the hatch which is probably what I'll end up doing.

I once saw a GTI towing a tiny little box trailer. It doesn't look right at all.

Well there's a removable one poking out the back of my GT fitted by the dealer. It wasn't cheap from memory - like $1400 or so. It isn't a VW one, it's a Best Bars one from kiwi land. What is neat is that it feeds into the ESP traction system, and the car allows for the trailer when connected. It also tells you if the bulbs etc are out, so at least that's something. Still a rort!

I ride dirt bikes. My car must tow.

                      The silly woman's on crack.

Yes, there is a factory bar available. In fact, having just researched rear bumper bars, there's a whole different part number for bumpers that have the towbar. There's an aperture plus a cover for when you don't need the tongue in place.

The bar is significantly more expensive than 'normal' bars, due mainly to the wiring. Don't quote me, but a bar for a Polo is approx. $400 and the Golf is like, $1200 - the Polo has regular non-multiplex wiring. In addition, the factory Golf unit makes allowances for reverse parking sensors (if fitted) and headlight adjustment (apparently) if you opt for the wizzy headlights. And, as already mentioned talks to the ESP and does the bulb out thing.

Like all uninformed salespeople who know stuff all about their own product, she needs a slapping

We are on the same page there. Are you the same cogdoc that is on DBW?

I rang RallySpeed in Artarmon (Sydney) they charge $650 and it uses the VW wiring. So VW can keep their towbar.

Absolutely. Bikeless at the moment, so haven't been to DBW for a while. Tax time may just change all that!

I had the same dilemma recently and after waiting nearly 4 months for my GT TDI to arrive canceled and opted for the GTI, mainly because my wife did not like the lag off the line of the diesel. We do 10k km of short trips in the city each year whereas on longer trips any lag is not such an issue. The DSG also seems the better option in the diesel as the very narrow torque band demands a lot of gear changing (in town anyway). We had a manual on order.

We've had a manual GTI since mid-May and love it but if we were doing many more miles per annum would strongly consider a DSG GTD.

Ordered a GT TDI DSG today, white with anthracite leather. $41090 drive away. Should be here by the end of the month.

My wife didn't like the lag much either but I hear once the DSG learns, things smooth out a lot. Besides she isn't getting the car for another 4 years.

I considered the GTI and TSI but didn't want the fuel consumption of the GTI or the complexity of the TSI, besides I love the torque of the TDI.
