Issue with steering rack

Ive had an issue in the past with my steering rack where by it would creak when turning left. I subsequently had it replaced under warranty. Low and behold, the same noises have re-appeared and the dealer has inspected the system and is adamant all is fine. Im taking it back again as l am not satisfied with the outcome and will take it further should they dcline to replace or repair under warranty.

My question is.....Can a faulty steering rack cause issues with the feel coming through the steering wheel, as i seem to get vibration coming through that is characteristic of the wheels not being balanced. I have balanced my wheels twice in 3 weeks, and l still get the slight vibration when the car hits speeds of 100km/h upto 115km/h then stops vibrating after that.

What do you guys think??? Could it be related to the steering rack issue l know is there or am l just getting bodgy wheel balances??? What can cause the wheels to vibrate if lve already had 2 tyre places balance the wheels??

It could be that the tyres are not a circle shape.
Ask your tyre fitter while balancing the tyres to spin each tyre and watch it from the side; it should be a perfect circle.
If it's not, they have to be replaced. You can also try to swap rear tyres to the front and see if it fixes the problem.

Hi,

It is not uncommon for tyres to go "out of round"

If the tyre fitters just put the cover over the wheel when it's on the balancer they may not pick up any "out of roundness" (is there such a word )

The tyres maybe balanced but simply not round as suggested in a previous reply.

may I ask, what wheels are on your car,center bore size (should be 57,1) brand, size, et(offset), and what brand tyres do you have.

regarding your st/rack noise... have you had any suspension mods done? Could be any number of things.

only if we know complete picture, we may be able to complete the puzzle and give the right answer.

They are replica 18" mk5 r32 wheels. The offest is 45, so they are a perfect fit even though the original 17" are 51. My tyres are Bridgestone s03's and are the same rolling diameter as the original conti/oem wheel that came on the mk5 Gti.

vw tech is spot on. Fit the oe wheels on if you can... you'll know the problem is in the wheel/tyre combo. If you don't have oe wheels, I am sure one of the fella members could help

when the tyre shop is balancing your wheels/tyres ask them to spin it by hand infront of you, and it's easy to spot the problem, regardless of the fact that the tyre machine says it might be "0/0"

Did you say, suspension is standard or it has been moded... springs, sways etc?

Going again to my tyre guy. Checking to see whether the centre bore is the same. If not, then that could be the issue and l'll need centre locating rings made up. The place l bought the rims from said the wheels are a bore size of 57. Our cars come out at 57.1 hub size, so he's saying there shouldnt be a problem. Until l measure them l can only speculate.
