  • Mk5 golf brakes and suspension upgrades.

    Hi guys,

The wife's mk5 golf needs some love:

The brakes all round need replacing- both rotors and pads. Her car is just a mid range 2L and I am wondering if there is a nice budget upgrade we can do whilst replacing them? Se regulary take the car through windy hills roads and plan to swap the 16" wheels to 18" so some larger or maybe even just slotted rotors would be nice?

Also the front shocks are hissing like alot of other mk5s I see.. I'm wondering if instead of just replacing shocks there are packages or even coil overs we can replace them with that will lower the car slightly and not break the budget?

Thanks for the replies in advance!

    Aaron.

I can get you K Sport Coilovers which are fully adjustable shoot me a message on my Facebook business page if you are interested.

I also have R32 brakes for sale at the moment. Just depends on what you want to do with the car.

Either way low dust performance pads are the way to go. No-very little dust unlike stock and pull up a lot nicer

Discs and Pads from GSL Rallysport, I think R32 brakes would be overkill. Remsa pads and a change of brake fluid would be a good move.

Am I right in saying that gti rotors (317mm) should fit in replacement of my (280mm) stock rotors and still use the same calipers?

You need to move the caliper out to cover the larger disc. So it doesn't just bolt in.

Honestly, it's not worth the effort. Get new discs which are probably 288mm and better pads. Replace the fluid. Job done.

                ^^^^ this

for a budget upgrade suitable for suburban bopping about get the remsa pads with either the fremax or DBA 2000 series rotors.

The whole lot will be less than $500.

for the suspension - try these if you want a full F & R kit [VIC] Golf Mk5/6 KONI SPORT adjustable shocks & struts + front and rear mount kits

Or these if you just want an OEM replacement they are about $500/set off ebay for bilstein or sachs

It's actually 312mm & 288mm. you need the GTI caliper carriers. You can buy them off ebay but you have to make sure you get the right ones as there are slight variations.

I bought a set of gti carriers and upgraded mine to 312mm, dont think it makes it stop any better, just added more weight, i am currently this weekend fitting tyrolsport caliper stiffening kit to see how it goes, i have heard they make a good difference. Also for handling on a budget add a larger rear sway bar off a gti, you should pick up one for 50 bucks, make sure it comes with the rubbers and fit it yourself as it is a few bolts only. I found a set of fk streetline coilovers for 500 bucks which do the job nicely also
