Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Oil for 2.0FSI

I have a 2.0 FSI confortline due for service soon.

I know there's a vw-spec for the oil - any idea how this translates to the usual grading system? (0W50 etc??)

Any recommendations? Also, volume (? just on 5L iirc)

And i did search, but couldnt find.

    Thanks in advance.

Ignore the 0W50W type ratings, just look for "VW 504.00 approved" (or whatever grade oil your owner's handbook says your engine should have).

Don't let anyone (not even your official VW dealer) tell you an oil that doesn't have VW approval is "just as good" or "is actually better", as VW motors can be mighty fussy about having the correct oil in them, and it isn't worth taking the risk.

      Thanks gregozedobe!

Where would i find this info? On the bottle? Websites? Presumably i cant ring VW and ask them b/c they'll just say "we'll give it to you at service".

Sorry, bit of a dunce when it comes to this.

If it helps context, i can get a purchase discount with an oil company so would prefer to buy and supply to dealer for the service due in a couple of months.

Mobil 1 and Castrol Edge will have an "approved for VW 502 00", etc written on the back label. Also you can ring the Oil Technical Service Hotline which is also on the Label. Hope this helps!

As PW said, it should be printed on the oil bottle. Depending on the manufacturer it could also be on their web site - just be careful that you are looking up the specs for the exact same oil you are intending to buy, it can get very confusing sometimes (eg look at all the different Castrol Edge products, some have VW approval, lots don't). Looking at the bottle just before you pour it in is the safest way for most people.

If you are buying in bulk be very careful that (a) you actually get the correct oil (I'd want to see the original bulk container myself), and (b) you don't contaminate the oil with anything before it gets into your engine. And also compare the cost of buying oil separately and supplying to your dealer, sometimes you don't actually save that much (the dealer often makes more money on the labour and "extras" than the oil).

Thanks all. It wont be a bulk discount, just a 5L bottle, but i have access to special pricing. And there's no way i'll get stung more than i paid last time via the dealer!

Thanks again - will look at label and if that fails, ring oil companies.

Ok, have gone for Castrol Edge Sport 5W30. It is VW 502.00 approved.

Oh, and it was only 5L bottle (given manufacturer says 4.6L capacity) should be fine then. (Not "bulk" hehe).
