Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • golf gti or not

i have a gti lined up. its top of the redbook.com.au price - but the km's are low <80k, full VW service history, full leather. my2008 (made 2007) so im happy to pay the top price ....

my question today is ... is this a wise choice?
i wouldnt have thousands to chuck at it. i have no issues to change oil, timing belt ... and il check DSG service/work instructions, but il probably be doing that myself also.

also i wouldnt want it to seriously depreciate over the next 4-5 years.

ive just read about ABS modules. mechatronics. DSG problems. Misfires. PCV's. A/C faults ..........

    advice guys ?
    any thing?

    thanks

I have no idea what the redbook price is but if you are paying top dollar then the value will fall.

If something is going to break then it probably will have done so by now. OTOH, older cars do have failures - that's why they are cheaper to buy. I was laways told that if you are buying a 2nd hand car you are purchasing the unused kilometres & therefore should factor in higher maintenance costs.

Personally, I factor in $1000 for planned maintenance & known wear items like tyres and another $1000 for unplanned maintenance. If I don't use it this year it goes into the "bank" for next year.

GTIs are a good car - a better choice than many others.
