Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Introducing my 2008 VW Jetta to Watercooled

    Hi All,
Finnaly i would like to introduce my new toy to Watercooled. After looking for ages for a Midsize car i couldn't go past a Jetta. The boot space is second to none on cars this size on the market and the value for money is unbelievable. The amount of options fr the price nothing compares.
After deciding on the Jetta i originally wanted a diesel and after looking at a couple none of them were right. They don't come up often on my area. So last week i went to have a look at this one which is the 2.0 FSI with a full VW service history and in fabulous condition. I am the second owner, the original owner was a retired school teacher so it as they say has been over serviced and under driven with only 90,000 k's on the clock. (I know i am in for $1500.00 for the next service though).
She is a blank canvas and the first thing i think i want to do is upgrade the stereo to the RCD510 and then from there i really am unsure i think it looks great standard.
I look forward to trawling through the forums and getting inspiration and answers to some questions i have!

Some questions i actually have now:
    1. I have noticed other Jettas and Golfs getting round and their headlights have gone cloudy. Os there a way i can prevent this happening to my Jetta?
    2. After having falcons all my life (company cars not my choice) i have noticed the brake dust builds up a lot faster with this car. Is there a reason for this or am i just braking to hard?

    See some photos below.

      Hi there

In my experiences cloudy headlights are cars that have never seen a garage from the inside. Those cars are exposed to direct sunlight day after day in their entire life. If you go with your fingers over the headlights, you will notice that surface is very coarse and appears to almost started melting. Looks like you picked a extremely well maintained Jetta, very likely to have been garaged most of the time.

With break dust, that is standard on most european cars, no matter how easy you are on your brakes, it will build up quickly most of the time. Possibility is to have them replaced by brands like Bendix but cannot guarantee improvements. I would still stick to manufacturer originals despite the brake dust. I personally clean my wheels on regular basis just to keep them clean. I know it;s time consuming but not much that can be done about that.

That is my view at least.

Headlights being 'cloudy' are the result of UV damage, most detailers can polish and affix a film over your lenses to prevent this. I've recently had mine done, came up 100%.

Brake dust is merely a balance of soft pads which feel nice and are very quiet, versus a harsher compound which may squeal/howl. Finding a balance can be a challenge, ATE make ceramic pads which dust less but I'm finding them to be average under pedal.

        Enjoy!

Thanks guys for the info. This Jetta will be sleeping inside all the time. I now just worry when she is in the work car park. Sounds like the rule is to stick with the genuine pads! Thanks heaps for replying!

In European cars, it's typical that they also fit quite soft discs and they are now designed to wear with the pads over time. It improves the cold weather braking performance (not so much of an issue in QLD).

My car is garaged but does sit outside at work and I've started to notice the cloudy surface appearing on my headlights at the top edges. Just one of those things and it's taken nearly 2 years of being outside to go like this so it's slow.

I used some Turtlewax 2-in-1 headlamp cleaner and the clouding has gone and super clear and shiny.

                        Welcome to Jetta ownership

I've owned my 2008 2.0 FSI (naturally aspirated) manual since 2010 with no ownership (mechanical) issues to date apart from the usual car park capers

If this is your first Volkswagen I would highly recommend reading the owners manual, there you learn all the tricks of your Jetta.
