Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MK5 GTI DSG Gearing

When slowing down under normal driving to make a left turn, the DSG gearbox tends to shift all the way to second gear and in rare occations first gear. This is really annoying as most of you would know once you re-accelerate you get a pretty big turbo kick. The correct gear should be 3rd and there no point getting a DSG if you have to manually shift the damn thing. I'm not sure if this is just my car and will be speaking to the VW services guys once it's due for service.

In the mean time have any owners had similar experiences with the DSG gear selections?

    Thanks,

How long have you had the car? it takes a while for the gearbox to learn your driving style fully, mine was like that at the start but now it nearly second guesses me on most changes.

Still doesnt handle speed bumps too well though, i lock it in 3rd for them.

Mine will drop down to third for corners. If I use Sport mode it will drop back to 2nd and I've never had it go back to first. Sounds like something is amiss to me.

Nope, never noticed that sort of lag in the DSG in my Jetta TFSI. If anything I'm having to give it a bigger bootful to make it shift to 2nd (unless in Sport).

            Gear ratios

Does anyone know if theres a different set of ratios employed in the DSG for the GTI, GT and normal Golfs?

I have a 2005 comfortline, and it doesnt drop into 6th until 80, whilst my father in law's GT drops into 6th at 60.

I suspect the diff ratios might differ because the GT accelerates like its been dropped off a cliff.

Can the dealer zero the "memory" for the DSG and force it to learn from scratch?

have not had this problem in my 08 Jetta TSI... i have to completely come to a standstill for it to shift into 1st gear. cornering it will stay in 3rd and i have to boot it to get it to go into 2nd. in "D" it shifts gears really early... usually only revving to 2000 before a shift... it will be in 6th at 60kmh.

Jetta DSG changes gears too fast. Stupid ****.

it'll hit 6th in 60 and then you have to gas it for it drop to 3rd for the overtake....or slip it in S and fly.....then change it back to D when you slow down back to 60km cause the sport mode hates the slow speed, i actually get jolts.
