Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Shark Fin with a Tail

My new Golf GTI has satnav installed. I've a shark fin antenna with a standard antenna sticking out the back. Is this usual? I notice on TMTUNING there is an OEM shark fin that does satnav and radio without the horse whip sticking out of it.

Would this be compatible with my car and would it affect radio reception? I can't recieve AM at all (no Alan Jones - that's a good thing).

Yes that is the new antenna and I wouldnt change it however you can unscrew the horsewhip and install a sharan antenna.
Just check the thread size first. If youve got a M5 thread then you'll need the replica sharan antenna from xxxxxx as the TM tuning OEM one is a M6 thread.

xxxxxx, because im at work and cant remember the supplier, its in my bookmarks at home.

Why do you say you wouldn't change it?

How do I tell if I've got an M5 or M6 thread (I thought that meant M5 or M6 Golf and wondered how they had M6 stuff out already )?

I was researching this the other night and read that some antenna's have a booster/built in amplification.

      Is the site Parts4euro?

Are there any other questions I could ask?

I only say i wouldnt change it because i think the new antenna looks better once a short stubby has been screwed in.
To check the thread unscrew the existing antemma and measure the thread with a vernier.
Yes, its parts4euro that have the M5 threaded one.

I just cut off the "whip" part off mine and it looks like a subby now. It didn't affect the reception, with the stock stereo, as well as the aftermarket one. It might be different with mk5 cars, not sure

A vernier! A vernier! No home is complete without a vernier.
