Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MK5 2.0 TDI Turbo Replacement?

My TDI has recently started to make a very high pitch whine/whistling noise on acceleration, kinda like a alternator noise through the speakers, but it's coming from the engine bay. Research through forums seems to point me towards the turbo being on it's way out. Performance isn't affected, it's just annoying and kinda embarrassing at this stage.

I intend to get it checked out by a garage so am after recommendations for a reputable, reasonably priced repairer in Western Sydney (close to Penrith) who is familiar with Golf Turbo issues. Anyone also able to give a ballpark figure of what a new installed turbo will set me back so I don't drop dead in front of them if a replacement is due.
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

    Hi
It could be just a boost leak so if they recommend a turbo change tell them you want the old one as proof and check it yourself.

      Boost leak? More details please....

Power doesn't feel like it has changed since noise began a few weeks ago. Car has just turned over 165k by the way.

Could be boost leak or alternator pulley. I wouldn't really be leaning towards a turbo @ 165k just yet. Need to check the basics/common issues first. Take it to a VW specialist not joe blow mechanic who will tell you that your indicator fluid is low.
