Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Tow bar wiring, TDI comfort line.

    Hi all,

It's been a while since I posted here and I've done a search but haven't found what I'm looking for so here goes.
I've got a factory fitted tow bar with the 13 pin plug and adapter to 7 pin at delivery on 05. I've used it in the past and it all worked fine.

I know have a glider trailer fitted with LEDs and the lights on the trailer wouldn't work, all I had was some random pulsing on the side lights. The trailer lights work fine hooked up to another car and when tested.

When I tested the car with a multi meter and a light sauce I was getting weird indications that made no sense.

So I did as much reading as I could find and found on the Amarok page some info replacing the 13 pin plug with a 7 pin.

So I did the swap, I found that the 13 pin plug had an earth issue anyway. With the 7 pin plug installed I've got everything working but I have faint blinking through the lights that aren't in use. Also with the lights off and the key out of the ignition the taillights/blinkers flash every couple of seconds.

Does anyone know of a solution for the blinking/flashing with LEDs fitted to the trailer?

The control module for the trailer electrics emits a pulse-width modulated signal, which as you may have seen with your multimeter, is not a consistant 12.5V. This signal is sent out all the time for bulb monitoring, which is why you're getting that flicker.

The actual problem you're facing is the control module's incompatibility with LED trailer lights. There is an adaptor for the factory harness that allows the genuine wiring kit to work with LED lights.
