Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 225/40R18 Pirelli tyre advise (MO)

Hi all and yep a can imagine this trend has been done to death but i am in the market for new boots on my GTI Pirelli
225/40ZR18 92w/92y i have found some PZero's cheap but there (MO) can any one yell me what the difference is between MO and non MO Pirelli tyres,
also what in your opinion from experience is the better tyre from the following tyres
i can get a set of conti sport contact 5 for $520 (conti have a sale on but 4 pay for 2)
    goodyear Eagle F-1 Asymmetric 2 $756 a set 4 (Tyroola.com)
    Pirelli P-Zero (mo) $710 a set 4 (Tyrebuy.com)
    Michelin Pilot Sport 3 $722 set 4 (Tyroola.com)
Michelin super sport $850 set of 4 (Tyroola.com)
and if any one knows of any other wholesalers or retailers who have good deals let me know
i work in motor industry so tyre fitting and balance will only cost me about $80

im leaning toward Conti based on price but i do believe they ware dome fast
I'm no road racer but do want the grip and wet and summer I'm in Perth so very hot in summer not so in winter and we have good roads, and were always after longevity and performance lol yep they don't mix lol

Thank you for your time and input

The MO (Mercedes Original) marking on the sidewall indicates a tyre made to Mercedes Benz' requirements with regards to its properties.

There may be possible differences in construction, uniformity, tolerances, compound, tread pattern, grip, braking, aquaplaning resistance, wear, noise, rolling resistance, etc. Differences are not always visually apparent.

Tyres made to OE specifications are not necessarily better or worse - just made with a different balance of properties.

At $756 a set, the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 would have to last 45% longer than the Continental ContiSportContact 5 in order to match its value.

Thus, the Continental ContiSportContact 5 is the best value tyre on your list, because its purchase price of $520 a set should compensate for its higher wear rate.

would you rate the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 higher than the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 and Pirelli P-Zero?
only reason i was looking at the pirelli P-Zero as they are OE fitment for the GTI Pirelli and they seam to be the bast selling tyre on a lot of tyre whole sale and retail stores thinking there must be something in that statement

      Thank you

The Goodyear is a balanced tyre that does well in most disciplines with no significant weaknesses. The Pirelli is similar, but with slightly higher grip levels and wear rates. The Continental builds on top of that, with a bit more grip and a bit more wear.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 3 is a nice road tyre with good steering feel and is a little better in the wet. The Michelin Pilot Super Sport is the best dry performance tyre on that list.

The Continental SportContact 5, Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 and Pirelli P-Zero often trade places on the podium in Evo magazine's annual tyre tests, so you can't really go wrong with any of the tyres on your list, including the Michelins.

That may be explained by its purchase price, as the vast majority of motorists decide their tyres mainly on price.

This applies to every vehicle and tyre, but the exact design of the Pirelli P-Zero tyre supplied to Volkswagen for the GTI Pirelli will be different from those supplied for the retail market. Versions with an MO marking will be different again.

Having said that, the Pirelli P-Zero is not a bad tyre. If you are keen to try them, then by all means do. Tyre preferences are highly subjective and the forum would welcome your feedback on them.
