  • Folding External Mirrors

    Hi All,

    Three days into Golf ownership.

In the manual it shows a position on the external mirror control that folds the mirrors in. Mine doesn't have this position. My mate thought the dealer showed him a way to do it, but can't remember what it was.

Is it possible to fold the mirrors in automatically? I've searched through the forums and didn't come up with anything. Ideally, I'd like it to do this whenever it's parked.

    regards,

    Mark

I understand the wiring is there but there is no motor in the mirrors of the Australian Golfs. I read on another forum there was someone who did get it working after fitting new mirrors (or motors in the mirrors).

Do you have a link to that forum?

Just had a look but can't find it, it was on either vwvortex.com or golfmkv.com from memory.

It was a multi page thread with pics of the different controllers on door (showing the heated ones and also the one with the folding part) and details on the loom (cable in there for motor) along with details on the motor etc.

          Here you go:

Mk V Door Electrics Info Thread (w/ Part Numbers)

How to get EOS mirror lights?

          Can you say $

Note: Apparently the mirrors don't actually fold that much, about the same as if you fold your current mirrors in by hand.

I was tempted to go down that line as I wanted the under-mirror puddle lamps (not for any practical purpose, I just think they're cool).

However at around US$500 for the pair of mirror mounts I have scrapped that idea. I am also confused over whether the external mirrors are auto dimming or if they are referring to the interior centre mirrow. External auto dimming mirrors would be useful.

Please keep this thread updated with what you decide to do...

Heres a chaeper option if you just want puddle lights.

As for the auto dimming side mirrors, Im also undecided whether they are auto dimming or not, its a bit hard to tell cause if they are then i dont thnk they dim as much as the rear view mirror. My dealer told me they were when i picked up my car.

Yeah, thats the post that sparked me to look into the whole thing. I dont wanna go drilling holes in my car quite yet.

Re dimming side mirrors - apparently it's available as an option on Passat in AU. I'll have to see if I can take a look at one.

                    While on this subject,
How do you replace indicator light globes in the mirrors? Not that I need to replace it but for future reference.
By the way, it is very tricky to replace rear light bulb, but I like warning signal display in the dash

It's 3x LED lamps but you replace the whole module. Being LEDs, they should still be working when the rest of your car has rusted away.

                        BTW it's GTI not GTi.

                          Thanks
I am aware of life time of LEDs but it was just in case. I already need to replace rear light bulb. Oh what a pain in the rear side.....

Yeah, dunno. I have a Jetta so LEDs again hehe.

On that note, I'll need to find someone with small hands if I ever need to replace parking lights on the front. My mitts are way too big to get in there. Might be easier to pull the bumper and the whole light assembly.

I had to do this with rear tail light and took a little while to figure it out
