Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf mk5 1.6 FSI gearbox

So a friend of mine has this problem, can anyone suggest something ? any help would be appreciated thanks

"I have a Golf mk5 2008 1.6FSI Match with a JHY gearbox and while driving the crownwheel and pinion had gone with only 30,000miles. After a quick research I realized that it's a common problem, and even if I but new parts(O2T crownwheel and pinion alone cost approx 700 euros) and replace them, it may fail again. I was thinking of changing the gearbox even if it's 5-speed, maybe I solve the problem but am not sure what gearboxes fit or if the problem is solved. What do you suggest?"

Is it the rivets that have failed?

Might be worth having an engineering shop replace them with bolts in the future.

G5 5 speed gearboxes are leftover from golf 4.Just throw in a s/h one and fingers crossed.
You can buy a cw bolt kit from any dealer.

No not the rivets that failed, the tooth of the crown wheel and the pinion 3 teeth each all gone and its making a big rumble noise, they cost alot to replace so im just checking if there's any solution, might fit another gearbox or something.
