Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The reader I think is a bolt on piece on the bottom of the RNS510 from what I've read but I don't think it has a usb interface that connects it (maybe internally).

If it could read SDHC cards that would be perfect as I would just toss a 32GB in there.
I have just tried using a SDHC card with RNS510 and it did not work. Had to go and buy a SD card (2gb) and it worked no problems.

I ordered a Golf GTI in March but chose not to option the Sat Nav as it was a bit ordinary. I'm a bit cut that the dealer knew I wanted it but didn't tell me that two weeks later there was a new version RNS510 that could have been added to the order.

Anyway the point is, I want it, but need to know what the details are as far as getting it, fitting it, the sharkfin antenna and price etc.

Being a typical car dealership, everything that was possible at purchase is now impossible at delivery so I'm being told that it's not able to be done. I just don't believe this somehow.

So just wondering, I remember seeing something/someone/somewhere on the MKVForum about a bloke in Brisbane had fitted one to his GTI so I was curious to see if anyone here may know him or know more about fitting RNS510 to a new GTI. Yes mine comes with the large MFD from factory.

      I'm in Brisbane.

Thanks for your help in advance.

      Paul
So..... you have the unit with you?, what was the reason that the dealer gave you for not install it?

      Cheers!

Apparently the file format for SD cards is FAT(16?), and that has an upper limit of 2GB. Having said that, I read where there are very rare 4GB SD (not SDHC) cards available and that these CAN be read (can't confirm this).

This is strange that they've chosen to limit the SD slot to 2GB, yet as Mav said a 32GB memory stick works in the other slot. The Chinese knock-offs have 2 SD slots that apparently have the ability to read 2 x 32GB SDHC cards (handy - as they don't have the 30GB HDD that the RNS has). The SDHC appears to use FAT32 formatting.

It'll be interesting when the SDXC cards come on line (Q1 this year) as they have a current limit of 2 TB! (just read about a 1TB card being released now - it uses MS's new exFAT format). This blows my mind, as I remember paying $1000 for a 1GB external hard drive (a brick), yet 1GB thumb drives are give-aways these days! But 2TB on an SD card!???? Shesh...

Details of the 4GB cards that work are listed here.

The reason for the limit is mainly a timing one, the RNS 510 was on the drawing board years before it was released. The new RCD 510 for example can take 32GB+.

Most of the chinese knockoffs can take a SDHC card for the navigation side and and have a limit on the music side of 2GB because of the platform they use, there are details on 6050 thread at golfmkv.com.

With the MDI interface you can run a 500GB+ 2.5" external drive or any size usb memory stick.

It takes 5 minutes of work to swap out an SD controller with a SDHC controller. They'd be very similar price and almost identical technically.

For those talking about why it's incompatible, it's more low level than FAT (ie an SDHC re-partitioned and formatted with FAT16 is unlikely to work). SDHC changes the hardware addressing scheme the controller uses in order to address much larger capacities. The controller is not compatible with the card themselves.
