Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Mate, if you have the same model of Golf, how about you post the pictures of the same area, so he can see it is a normal.
Clearly to me it looks like it was touched up or repainted.
He has to be sure that the car he is buying has not fault, so he can put it in the rest. Other wise it would be always on his mind.
I would ask and investigate myself, if it was my car to buy.

I would still investigate the situation..

When taking delivery of a vehicle you are urged by the salesperson to have a good look at the car and point out anything you see strange (at least thats what Trivett Honda did with me). If you do notice something out of the ordinary it is then up to you to refuse taking delivery till it has been rectified, so make sure you do not sign the delivery papers till it has been looked at.

Buying a new car and taking delivery of it should be an exciting experience, but if something just doesn't feel right, act on it.. Don't be a sheep and follow the herd.

      Hope all goes well mate.

I am not sure whether this is normal or not, however I would be careful of accepting the old chestnut "oh this occurs on all golfs" or similar.

Query with the dealer anything you have a problem with. Have a look in other forums and for example there are comments on the hubs for the disc brakes rusting. I advised my dealer of the same issue and was advised "all golfs are like that". My purchase was for a GTI. Should I accept that on a brand new car that there is rust? I don't think so!

Its like buying anything .. you expect it to be of a standard that is acceptable. Don't think you are being finnicky just because you want your car to be perfect at the moment you picked it up. After all buying a car is not a transaction .. it is an experience .. and those experiences are all too often ruined by lack of attention to detail from dealers.

Actually, there was a bit of rust on the disc brakes and I did get the line that all cars get that. What happened in your case Philmart?

I'd be refusing the car, this means it was one of the cars loaded on the top deck with ocean spray hitting the car.

Seriously though, haven't you even seen a car with rust on it's discs? Some cars will show rust after sitting overnight but generally it takes a bit longer. As soon as you apply the brakes a few times it will disappear.

thats so incredibly untrue and misleading. surface rust can show on the disk brakes after 10 hours or less and is NOTHING to worry about and means jack all about where the car was on the boat.

Didn't you read my second paragraph, the part where I said "seriously though"???

They don't put cars on the deck of the ships, they can't get water on them unless it sinks or the wharfies give it too much throttle out of the back when unloading.

Sorry .. didn't mean the discs on the brakes themselves .. the discs pads will run that right as rain. I am talking in the "flange" between the discs and where the wheel clamps on.

I haven't brought it up as I am getting a good list up before I have my car taken in. Nothing major apart from the paint having come away in the crevices where the roof runnels at the top of the car end at the hatch. Right there there is no paint on the edge/corner. Just appears to be filler only.

But the rusty "flanges" will be mentioned .. call me a whinger .. but I figure if I pay 45K for a car and it is touted as new it should at least look new at the time I pick it up!

Post some photos because I can't follow what you're talking about the with the paint crevices and runnels? Then you can get some proper feedback.

A look around my car park at work which includes my R, Lexus, Audi, MB and BMW cars all well over $45k, I did not find one car with this area of the brake disc painted.

This area of the brake disc very quickly becomes coated in brake dust from new.

On a new car with virtually no kms on it, if some water has
dried on this surface then some surface rusting will be noticeable this is normal.

If you can get the dealer to paint it, good luck but don't feel offended if you get laughed at when you mention it.
