The build quality coming out of Mexico seems to be world class on the Jettas.
VW are investing heavily in that plant to churn out more Beetles,Boras ,Jettas, and Golf Variant/Jetta sport wagons.

I've been very happy with the Jetta TDI. Everything fits together so well, and it's a very solid car.

There's a small rattle/jingle somewhere in the engine bay I think, that has only just started in the last 100kms or so (1300kms on the clock now). It only happens when cruising at about 80, and the DSG shifts to 6th putting the revs pretty low. As soon as the engine is under load or I shift down it goes away. The Jetta's very quiet when cruising, and I can only really hear it if I turn the radio and the ventilation off ... but I know it's there ...

Anybody else had something like this?
MY08 Jetta TDI, DSG, Platinum Grey, Anthracite Leather, Foglights
MY07 Polo TDI, Reflex Silver, GTI Wheels, GTI Suspension

Got my new 5d GTI a week or so ago. Build quality is great (as is everything else about it ). Had one annoying rattle from the area of the overhead sunglasses holder - when I took my wife's sunnies out the rattle went away...

We've got 2 or 3 rattles and buzzezs appearing after 2k on the road, irritating but no biggie really. Certainly much quieter than the Impreza we had!

I just remembered that SWMBO found a silver coloured stain on the anthracite leather on the back seat - no matter how hard she wiped it wouldn't come off. She was getting pretty aggro until I figured out it was the focused interior light reflecting off the seat belt clip.

aside from the new turbo, PCV valve, 2 new door trims and the numerous rattles id have to say yeah the golfs are pretty well built!

in my opinion everyone thinks theyre bullet proof and thats a myth. for me such a fantastic car like the GTI is really let down by all these issues i have had.. and its only 14 months old! i think the minute my warranty runs out i will be selling it.

worst part is we have had many Peugeots in the familly and they have been pretty much faultless.

Just catching up with this thread after my prior post about rattles in the 5k Golf V loan car. The worst part that I should have mentioned was the ticking sound of the steering. As the steering is turned, it emmits clicks along the way... reminds me of the clicks on ship's steering for navigation purpose. Hmmm... Aids precision rallying with navigator/co driver reading 5 clicks left and 3 clicks right?

My wife and I were thinking about a Golf TDI DSG and this has put her off to some degree... I was telling her this is not the norm but perceptions can be hard to change as there has been the occasional quality niggles with her friends' Golfs. These Golfs are a BIG hit with female type.

This wasn't the reason that I went for a Octavia 1.8 TFSI as my daily commute car, the main reason is the new 1.8 engine (eng code name EA888, I think this is the same unit in the new Audi A4 B8 series) and the space of the wagon. If this engine was available in the Golf/Jetta range, then that's what I may have gone for. Oh, then there is still the issue of no wagon for my cycling and gardening bits to lug, then there's prams as well.

Anyway, we are now tossing up between a Golf MkV TDI DSG, or Octavia TDI DSG or the new Peugot 308 for the missus and that's why it has to be auto. The Pacific TDI is now better value... got a few months to ponder...

Very tough choice there, but after sitting in one at the Perth Motor Show, I'd be leaning towards the Pug. I thought the Golf interior was pretty special, but the 308 leaves it for dead. With the optional leather seats, it has the sort of interior I'd expect to see on a 60k - 70k car! That full glass roof is also a very enticing option. The love it or hate it exterior is a tad more controversial though (I quite like it mind you), and it probably isn't quite as handsome as the Golf in most people's eyes.

I'm also guessing that the driving experience would fall just short of Golf mkV standards too, although the reviews are still quite good. And seeing as this thread is about build quality, it is worth noting that a survey of UK car owners found that the owners of French manufactured (Pugs, Citroens and Renaults) cars were by far the most dissatisfied with the quality of their vehicles. I think Peugeot have attempted to rectify things with better quality control in recent times though.

I'm not a fan of the Skoda styling, but they are good cars for the money.
