Does this sound right for my MY08 GT Sport MK5 Golf.

There are two different TPMS systems, one runs off of the ABS system, and the other runs off of individual sensors from each wheel. The system I described previously is the ABS system. Your ABS system will know if a tire is losing pressure because the rotational speed will drop, and that will trigger the TPMS light.

If this is the case then I dont need sensors in each wheel, all i need is the switch and wiring harness to add TPMS to my car.
Could someone who knows please advise.

The system on US cars has sensors for each wheel. The system we have in Australia works off the ABS. I don't know what you would actually require to add it to a car that doesn't already have it?

There are kits online for $75 US, if you can't find them I will post the link when I get home tonight.

The fitment is easy, the hardest part is you have to run a wire through the firewall to the ABS controller, other then that it's a few wires under the dash.

The kits come with the proper switch and a custom made harness.

Now I've got the GTI I don't have to worry about this, damn glad I didn't order one now like I was going to last week.

You can't fit the one that has the sensors in the wheels because they require sensors in the wheel wells. Well you could but it would be a massive massive job and aftermarket would be better. The diagram on this page shows you what has to be done. http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1817987

If youre right, which i think you could be from what ive read, then I can feel another mod coming on.
All we need is the switch and the harness.
        Switch $21, Harness $45
        http://oempl.us/index.php?main_page=...ort=20a&page=3

The harness plugs into the ABS module, now to find the module and see if it has the socket to accept the harness.
        Anybody know where its located.

        Woohoo, TMPS for me.

That's one of the sites, there are full instructions up on the web as well that shows you how to do it step by step. You have to take the wire through the firewall and you pull the boot off the plug and connect it to either an existing pin or a new one.

From what I read takes about 3 hours or so. You can get to the ABS module apparently without pulling the cover off the engine but it's a tight fit.

There is another site that sells these as well, can't think of who they are now but they are two guys in the states who sell some other mods.......... I have their link saved in my browser at home.

I'm about to order the bluetooth oem car kit install for the RNS510 (about $600 Australian Delivered) and I'm not looking forward to pulling apart half the car to install it but it's too cool not to install.

I've run wires through that grommet in the firewall for my hidden radar detector, and for a zz2's boost gauge. It's a bit of a pain, but nothing a coathanger can't fix.

Don't fret too much about pulling bits of trim off inside the car, I was pleasantly surprised with how easily / logically everything comes apart.

The BT install is not that bad. Ive done it.

Can you provide the link to the web instructions on the TPMS install when you get a chance.

Did you buy those extra cables so you didn't have to cut the wires behind the stereo/nav unit? They work out to cost a fair bit, I was thinking about baring the insulation, wrapping the wire and soldering and then covering over with electrical tape.

Stu can supply them for about 35 pounds (around $70 Australian).

Did you get the kit from him? Price just went up 20 pounds to 220 and 45 delivery + 13 pounds paypal fees. And of course the 35 pounds for the extra wiring.

I priced up the bluetooth module from another supplier and its about $800 US just for the module, the microphone is over $120 and so on so it's good value getting it from him.

I'll check for the how to install guide and the other sites when I get home (a lot of VW windows and links and favorites at the moment as I have to re-research everything after the change from GT sport TDi to GTI so hopefully I'll find them in there.)

I didnt bother with the extra wires and just used scotch loc connectors to splice into the wiring.
2 red ones for the smaller can bus wires and 2 white ones for the larger power wires.

There's plenty of room back there so I think I will do the same, save ~$60 dollars that way. I'll pick some up on the way home today.

One of the vwvortex threads has a link to a website for a golf install.

This is an A3 install so very similar in some respects.

                          Good luck with it!

                            Mav,
                            Thanks for all the info.
I am going to enable TPMS in the ABS coding with VagCom first and make sure it is learning the values. If so then i will purchase the switch and harness.
                            My ABS controller is,

Address 03: ABS Brakes Labels: 1K0-907-379-MK60-F.lbl
                            Part No SW: 1K0 907 379 AC HW: 1K0 907 379 AC
                            Component: ESP FRONT MK60 0101
                            Revision: 00H11001
                            Coding: 0023170

I want to be sure it will work as all the articles i have read refer to older versions of this controller.
The switch is only a reset as you know so i will be able to code the controller and see if it starts to learn.
Knowing me I'll probably see that its learnt then let some air out of a tyre just to see the light come on so I'll be stuck with the light on until i install the switch, or disable it again.

Thanks once again. I'll let you know how i go.

If anyone else is interested in a group buy for this then let me know, there are already 3 of us.

I'm sure it will work, I can't see them fitting one ABS controller to the GT and then the next car a GTI another ABS controller. If anything I would assume that all the controllers in the golf are compatible.

Still can't figure out why they don't fit this across the range, it's one more "extra" that the golf has when people are comparing cars and may well get them some more sales.

I wonder home many more $5 items they leave off or charge $$$ for. (actually I know, look at the UK models.... under seat bins (which I hope I get) etc etc)
