Shocked late 2012 with dealers quote $1800 for NOX sensor for 2005 Golf - so after searching around found a used one on UK E-Bay, a parts dealer in Essex, who shipped one out for less than $400 incl postage. It came out of Audi A3 but still fitted/worked - similar part number 06F907807A-AXW.
Strangely none of a dozen wreckers in Australia had a clue or wanted to discuss, even though some were wrecking Golfs at the time - possibly too technical for them.
Now the replacement sensor seems to have failed and I have to go through whole process again - or cough up $1800 to the VW dealer.
Does anyone have any clues ? The part is very easy to fit on hoist (fitting cost $90 at garage) so you'd think any mechanic would recognise items like these as potential niche market - they could get parts easy while wreckers are pulling off doors and other items for their resale.
Another issue of Golf, at least 2005 year, is the lights control, stereo knobs etc. have black peeling off - dealer says it is due to people, mainly women, using hand creams which interact with plastic coated surfaces, apparently fixed in later models, but not VWs responsibility. Interesting !
