Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 08 Golf GTI - Won't start intermittently

Recently, I get in the car and go to start it and it won't kick over (like if I have it in drive)

The car is in Park and foot is on the brake, but it won't start. I also cannot get it out of Park

I try a sequence of locking and unlocking the car, opening the door, leaving the door open and continue to try to start it and then all of sudden it'll will start

    Has anyone experienced this?

If you cant get it out of park then you may have a brake signal switch issue. When it happens again get someone to see if your brake lights are on when pressing the pedal. Also do the dash lights come on when you put ignition on?

Yes. Everything goes on likes it just about to start, but doesn't

It is exactly the same as if I had my car in Drive and tried to start it, but it's in Park

I feel it's something to do with the gears as, when it does this it won't let me take it out of park, even though my foot is on the brake

I hate intermittent problems. They're so hard to diagnose and if I brought it somewhere, it probably would happen

Possibly a shifter issue. Have you had it scanned? Could also be a brake light switch fault or many other things.

I have VCDS, might hook it up and see if any faults pop up

                I think it's this problem

VW Tech Tip: No Start/No Crank On Jetta's Keyless Start System
                I'll have to keep investigating

As mentioned before, once the car finally starts, the gear shifter moves fine, it is just when you go to turn the key and nothing happens
The dash lights come on, everything looks fine, but it acts like the starter has been unplugged

If you ever have tried to start your car while left in park, that is what is occuring, but of course the car is in park...

Sorry, we couldn’t find that page

I unlock the car, open the door, key in and turn to ACC and then try to start. Nothing

Tried to jump start it, nothing

Strangely the brake lights do not activate when hitting the brake, nor does it allow me to take it out of Park

Get your brake light switch checked out..if its not that then sounds ignition switch based..VDUB...

                      08 Golf GTI - Won't start intermittently

                      Yeah. Was thinking that too

Manually overridden the gear selector and put it in Neutral with no change. Disconnected neg terminal on batter for 20mins with no change either.

All fuses look to be intact

RACV will be here in 90mins. We'll see what they say

It wasn't the brake light switch? :O Have seen the the signal wire from the shifter module giving issues on one before. You really need to scan it up with VCDS and have a look at some of the measured value blocks to see what is going on.

I tried to scan it but the only module that didn't come up with an error was the Immobiliser

Everything else with came up with "Cannot Communicate" or "Malfunction"

AutoElec has gotten back to me. Apparently the Centre Control Module has failed. He said it is what "wakes" everything up in the car

Replacement cost from VW is $2500, but he said he has sourced the relay that has failed and can solder a new one on and program it in for me at a cost of $550

                              Hopefully it all work out
