Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Ignition noise 2007 Jetta TDI

This might be insignificant or require attention, but something that has been noticed with my Diesel Jetta. Just occasionally when turning the ignition, the sound from the engine turning over is quite a distinctive thump/shudder for an instant, then the car starts.

The car itself is running perfectly fine, no issues. Is this something you've heard before with the 2007 Jetta TDIs and is it likely to need attention?

    Cheers

Description is vague but tdi engines do start 'rough' when a battery is weak. The diesel engine requires a huge load compared to the petrol so shows weaker batteries quicker.
Also how old is your fuel filter.

These are two quick and fairly cheap things that keep the car running perfect.

the BKD and BKC diesel engines are known for this...mine did it too.....if the battery is weak then replace..if it still happens then you need to check out tye starter motor.. if the cranking speed is less than 280 RPM then this issue will occur...crank speed when faulty is usually around 150 -200RPM....VDUB..

Under warranty still so I am having the starter motor replaced. Battery worth checking too probably

Would make sense to do the battery first as replacing the starter if battery is down will still result in similar noise.

Had the battery checked this afternoon and it's all fine. Unfortunately now need to go down the path of replacing the starter motor. Under warranty dealer will provide a free used starter motor or charge me $250 for a brand new one. I think that's legal by the warrantee agreement here in SA.

But is $250 a good deal? It's basically to cover some of the cost to him to purchase the new part...

Yep. $700 odd at Volkswagen. Just priced myself one for the same reason. Very interested to hear if it solves your starting issue.

Thanks Steve. Have you had yours replaced yet? The sound mine is making is only small and only when the car is started at running temp, but I suppose something that may progressively get worse and worth getting fixed relatively cheaply under warranty.

VDUB how can the crank speed be measured? Easily or require mechanics input?

Why are you being asked to pay if car is under warranty.

I thought that was the idea of a warranty It breaks they fix it.

I guess from the age of yours it might be on an extended warranty though

I would get them to put a new battery in and try it.

Have had batteries tested and told Ok only for them to fail completely within a few days.

Have also been told battery was failing but was still starting the Cruiser months later.

Used car warranties here in SA specify that the dealer has the option of second hand parts if they wish and the buyer would pay the extra for new parts. Seems dodgy, but I looked it up.

Not sure if new batteries are covered by the new warranty but I can certainly enquire.

Why would a VW warranty be any different in Australia between states. If its an Australian warranty surely the same conditions apply countrywide.

IE what would happen if I had a problem in my Queensland bought car if I was holidaying in SA and had a problem.

                        Which states condition would apply.

I would be speed dialling VW AU I would think.

No it's not a VW AU warranty. This is a warranty from a random licensed used car sales dealer that has to offer a 3 month warranty on every single car it sells.

And look under 'Buying from a licensed dealer' then warranty.

That's fine, understandable. I wish it was still under VW extended warranty! I wouldn't be forking out $250 for a new starter motor!!
