  • GT Sport TDI - Flashing glow plug and Check engine light - no start

Hi All, I was hoping to get some community advice on a fault code reading.

Car failed to start after 20 min drive (and then parked for 10 mins), but will turn over.

Dash had ECU light, and flashing glow plug light. I scanned OBDII and got this log

    Vehicle Manufacturer: Volkswagen
    Vehicle Calibration ID: Not present

    Current Fault Log
    ------------------
    P0471: Exhaust Pressure Sensor Range/Performance

    Pending Fault Log
    ------------------
P0642: Unknown code - More information may be available on the web
P0322: Ignition/Distributor Engine Speed Input Circuit No Signal
B2AAA: Unknown code - More information may be available on the web

    Historic Fault Log
    ------------------
    ECU reports no historic faults
    Other discovered fault codes
(possibly pending, current or manufacturer specific)
    ----------------------------------------------------
ECU reports no other fault codes logged

    End of report.

I'm planning on getting it towed to VW in the morning, but hoping the Exhaust sensor isn't indicative of DPF issues.

    Any ideas?

How long have the warning lights been on? Like, before it failed to restart?

Looks like it'll need a DPF pressure sensor, and a Crankshaft position sensor.

Hi Uma, intermittently for 3 weeks. I took it to VW late August and they said it was an oil pressure sensor but not critical. I picked up an OBDII reader after that and noticed the P0471 popping up but car was running fine. The Pending fault log is all new!

DPF pressure sensor needs to be done ASAP. Dealerships should know this. If you don't replace it, you will damage the DPF.

Thanks Umai, I'll get it towed today and hopefully it will be resolved.

Yep this pressure sensor is a finicky part, but the new version VW carry seems more reliable.

Crank angle sensor will complain if car cranks for a bit without reaching the magic 400? rpm, it's probably fine. When my last battery was on the way out and car wouldn't start first go this error would always pop up, now with a new battery has never reappeared.

So you had the oil pressure light coming on for this issue?

Nope, no indication of oil pressure issues, just the CEL and VW mentioned it was the oil pressure sensor. When I got a reader, it came up as an exhaust sensor so I dont know what VW were on about!

Just putting this out there... The dpf sensor won't stop you from starting the car, so chasing that as the cause of your issue is abit wrong. Yes it needs to be addressed, however you may find you have bigger concerns. Engine speed sensors are a common fault on your motor.

Quick update, took it to a specialist here who was unable to diagnose fault, to their credit they didn't charge me for their efforts. They recommended towing to VW! Car is now in their *capable* hands.

Have you had the injector recall done yet? Also the tandem pumps tend to leak oil into the diesel which can also cause no starting. Good thing to check if idea's are exhausted.

Yep, injector recall happened about 6 months ago or so. I think it is now getting to the stage when noone can work it out. VW have had it all day with no sitrep....

Based on your description and without looking at data from the car. I personally would be looking at your dpf ash mass and if the dpf is actually blocked and also at the engine speed sensors.

Crank speed will cause a no start situation if not reasing correctly. However yoir description of coil light prior leads me to think your dpf may be clogged. This can also prevent engine start as the engine cant breathe.

Engine still starts with a blocked DPF, although it will not produce boost. Similar to what happens when a cat convertor fails on a petrol engine turbo.

As I said, best bet to figure out your dramas would be to clear fault codes, crank it and rescan to get a good idea of what is going on. Following that do the basics of air, fuel, timing and injector pulse. Keep in mind that injectors will not fire if rail pressure is <300kpa.

Have had a few now where dpf is blocked enough to prevent engine start. Either way more info is needed
