  • Can GTI use 5W-30 oil?

So hard to find Castrol Edge 0W-40, but apparently I rang 2 different stealers, they both said as long as its 0W-40, then you can use it, but kmart is 10% all oil and I can only find Edge Sport 5W-30, and i'm just 5500km and want to change both oil and filter, can someone confirm if 5W-30 is ok? I don't want to blow up my engine ...

I've scanned thru all the previous post and realise everybody's GTI use a different grade of oil some 0W-40 and some 5W-30, coz just these 2 are over $25 in price difference for 5L, just want to be 100% sure its ok, coz i'm going to take it to my mates' service station to have a oil change on Fri, THX!

Just go somewhere else and get 0W-40. It will cost you a bit more, but i wouldn't care, its your engine that needs to gt the best. It can't be more than $20 more than k-mart.
That's what i would do, but its your car in the end

if you go to the castrol website and see what they recommend for your car it comes back with the following

      CASTROL EDGE SPORT 5W-30
Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30 is a full synthetic SAE 5W-30, API SM/CF. ACEA A3/B3/B4 engine oil formulated for highly tuned fast fours and latest technology engines. It provides superb strength and ultimate protection even when running hard, fast or hot.

      Service Refill Capacity: 4.6* Litres

Ive had it in my GTI for the last 1000kms and it hasnt blown up yet. Did my oilchange at 7500kms and it really seems to run a lot smoother afterwards

Strange the dealers should be telling you to look for 0W-40 when the service book says 5W-30

When I took delivery of my 2.0l TDI the dealer specifically told me to use nothing else except Castrol Edge sport 5W-30 if I had to top up between service intervals.
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....

Yeh, mine's running Mobil 1 5w-30, dealers recommended only Mobil 1

Suppose the brand may not matter as much as the consistency of the oil...
