Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Odometer is out of wack

(Neither sure if this is where to post nor if anyone can actually help)

So my 2008 tdi golf's odometer has jumped by almost 1000kms in four days.
Thursday morning it turned to 159000kms and this morning read 159889kms. I have only done about 60kms over the weekend and was wondering how this could be fixed?
Does anyone else have this problem?

    Thanks
    Chelsea

I'd keep an eye on it for a little while and see if it skips again.

There's no cheap fix, as the instrument cluster will most likely need to be replaced with a new exchange one from VW, which are about $1,000 plus labour and programming. You can't simply re-apply the correct odometer reading on these.

We had a cluster sent to some guru who was apparently the best in the country, yet couldn't set it to the exact reading it was meant to be. He could round it off to the nearest 100,000km though!

Why wouldn't he set it to 0, after that with vcds to desired reading.

Yeah it is, but it could be locked out, if needed tools are used.

Depending on your intention, it's also highly illegal in Australia

It's illegal i guess every where else to, but you don't see the stopping of manufacturing of these tools.

What i wanted to say is, that if there is a guy who is able to do this kind of stuff, it is cheaper, than going to vw for cluster swap.

Thanks everyone. I'll do a call around for the cluster and a person.

It went back to 157000km this morning and I'm worried that maybe some other instruments will go haywire too so I'll definitely get it fixed.

                        Thread hijack!!!

Agree with you to certain point the manufacturer does not help in certain circumstances you are forced into buying a new unit with no other options. 2nd hand units should be a choice for the consumer and if any change needs to be made to readings they should be charged at a decent price and done totally legal. I think you would see more owners not resorting to other methods. Let's be honest car makers jack the price of parts in some instances costing 10 times more than what they were produced for. Of course it's business but $1000 for a dash insert plus let's say at least an hour for labour at roughly $180 who would go genuine? I wouldn't for a ten year old car.

The dash unit cost so much for this car as it also has the immobiliser built into it.
Alot of parts these days while look similar to the same component 10,20, 30 years ago on the outside. Inside they are alot more complex than one might think initially. Hence the price.

Vag parts are actually quite competitive for control units

                            Yea ive seen there prices.

Once again us in Australia have to pay an arm and a leg for products that overseas are receiving for 1/2 the price.

                            This was quoted by you!!!

Here in Australia we do get ripped off big time by parts. That's the whole point we should have an option to buy second hand if we choose and not be forced to only buy genuine for these issues!! Can it be legal to force a consumer to only buy new? I don't know the rules or what's legal but seems to me that the importers are taking us for a ride.
