  • Car Problem > VW Golf 5 2.0L FSI > Flashing exhaust light and engine stutter

    Hi Guys

i'm in a need of some help.

I have a VW Golf 5 2.0L FSI. Warranty expired in November so i'm going to have to sort this issue out of pocket. Since i don't know any reliable mechanics i thought i'd jump on the forum here and tell you the issues and see if we can narrow it down or possible sort the issue out

Symptoms: Engine shakes and stutters while idling....almost feels as if it will turn off and the idle needle dances a lot more than normal operation. Car feels as if it is NOT working on all cylinders. When you add revs you can feel/hear it misfiring...sounds like a freaking tractor . There is a lamp flashing as well when you turn it on. I looked into the manual and it says it is an exhaust lamp that's flashing........i drove down to service station and after a couple of minute drive the flashing stops and the light stays on. When i restart the car, the light starts to flash again.

Background(last 24 hours): I had the car over at a repair shop for some minor body work as someone hit it on a car park and broke the left headlamp and screwed up a bonnet a little (must have been a ute or something).......anyways that's not so important.........i picked the car up from panel shop and fuel was low which is how it was when i dropped it off....i drove to work and on the way went to Caltex petrol station to fill up.....i put the nozzle in and thought i'd ask the attendant there whether that Vortex petrol is 98RON octane as i normally don't use that petrol company.....he seemed a bit confused but said yes....after i filled about 20L i thought i'd stop because i could not see a reference of 98RON and saw another bowser with Vortex98....went to ask that idiot again and then he told me the one i used was 95RON....****ing retard.

OK so i reparked and fuelled up with 98RON fuel which was another 35L or so i think................

i drove off to work 5km (everything normal).........car was parked there all day.....left home 20km drive and then another couple of 5km trips that night and all was fine

Wife started the car up this morning to drop me off to train station >> car was stuttering as it if was going to turn off and that exhaust light was flashing. i checked oil it was ok thinking it was oil. Checked the manual and it said exhaust light is flashing take it to service centre. i took the car to petrol station near by and bought an octane booster/cleaner and put it in the tank........no change....it kinda felt at first as if the engine was revving normal but as i turned into the street it was bad again....so not 100% if i was just imagining

    Questions:
Do you guys think the fuel may have something to do with it?
What's the likely issue with the engine here?
Any suggestions i could try and see if it can be sorted out or should i stop driving and take it to service?

Any help would be highly appreciated!

    Whats your location.?
Someone with VAG COM could then at least tell you what the problem is before you put your hand in your pocket.

Even 95RON fuel should not hurt the car, but you could be looking at a stuck/bent valve or blocked exhaust or cat? If you really sure it does sound like its 1 cylinder the first thing I would do is check your plug leads and plugs.

yes i want to check the plugs and leads but i am not confident with this car with all the plugs and ****

it would be nice to have a link to a service manual or something similar to follow some instructions hehe

Just start by unplugging the plug leads one at a time and plugging them back in firmly. I wouldn't be surprised if one was loose.

mk5 runs coilpacks . They are around $80 each
Ive seen melted injectors on these models as well , although only on turbo Golfs .

Sounds like a stuffed coil pack.

get the car to idle - pull the coil packs off one at a time and one will not effect the idle (the others will cause a near stall).

FYI the last two posters are both mechanics. lol.

                  EDIT:
I take that back - Bug_racer is a mechanic and Guy H does work onVAG cars.

See there you go, I proved that a little bit of knowledge is dangerous.

I've never been under the bonnet of my Golf. I'll service a Commodore or Corolla but this one I don't touch

If the coilover trick doesn't work, it could very well be fuel. I have had an exhaust warning light come on my car twice in the past few weeks. I had a dealer look at it (it is under warranty) and they have said the O2 sensor has registered a fault, and it is likely that it is bad fuel.

Now, I normally run V Power only, but with the recent fuel shortage and both V Power and BP having supply problems I have been forced to use Caltex. Only since I have changed to Caltex have I been having these problems.

So it may be bad fuel. The dealer said that they have been having a lot of cars coming in with bad fuel problems lately. So, if its not coilovers, get a mechanic to extract fuel and check that it looks OK.

Unlike your problem however, my engine is running fine and my light stays on rather than flashes. It is a more serious problem if it is flashing. I also suggest finding someone with a VAG-COM to look for fault codes.
