  • GT TDI - Another new one!

    Hi Guys,

Well after 6 weeks of waiting my GT finally arrived in Perth and was delivered to myself on Thursday morning. I don't think the dealer was really ready for me. He said we would only need 20 - 30 min. Well after 2 hours I finally left.

A few things that I must say I was not impressed with. The car had swirl marks on it from some idiot "detailer" that is employed to do all the cars. Give a monkey a orbital and the result is not pretty. That combined with some serious water stains left me less than amused. However I did get the dealer to agree that if I could not get the car looking tip top myself (I would prefer to do the job properly) then I would send it back and choose a detailer to come and fix up the mess at their expense.

Two very small blemishes were found on the bonnet they are hardly noticeable but as with most of you. When your fussy you see everything. The icing on the cake was a 5 cm long scratch on the left front alloy.... So... Last but not least, at 100km / hr it has a lovely wheel shake. Poor balancing. From WA's most trusted dealer, it makes me wonder if they even did the pre delivery or if they just signed the boxes.

I polished her with a 3 step polish this morning, amongst some of the heaviest rainfalls Perth has had for a long time. And was able to remove a lot of the swirls and water marks. However not all have gone. So I think next weekend I will try the old clay bar and some Maguires Scratch X. I really do not want the car buffed again, it is not worth risking the clear coat.

I must say the Red looks effin hot when it is out in the sun. I will take more pictures ASAP once the weather fines up. But I have attached a couple of during and after shots of my little red tractor.

I will be writing to the dealer and asking them to replace the front wheel. I will however ask them that I am willing to sign off on the paint blemish and not send them the bill for the polishing I did, if they will contribute 3/4 of the price to place the old alloy wheel and tyre into the boot as my spare. So in fact I want to keep the slightly damaged one in lieu of the Space saver. Not sure if they will agree but I will keep on them until they do. I have already booked him into my suspension and tyre place next Sat for them to check the alignment and camber, plus to redo the balance. The dealer would do it, but likely they will screw it up again.

To the credit of the dealer however, after it was tinted (by a tinter I choose and paid for) a scratch of about 10cm was found on the left rear window. They removed the tint and tried to buff it out but it did not work . So without argument as too who caused the scratch they replaced the window at no charge (over $700 just FYI). They have also ordered a new black door insert (between the two windows) as it has a very small scratch on it.

My salesman and the Sales Manager have been great. I just find it shocking that the Dealer Principal is willing to deliver cars in this state.

All of the above aside, I can't take the smile off my face. I have had a few cars in the last few years (do over 40k a year). The last was a SP23 and before that a Subi Forester XT. And this car out handles them both and damn it really flys.

At present I am averaging 6l / 100km having only done 500 km since delivery. Also bare in mind that I am working the engine pretty hard to ensure it beds in properly.

So enough of my rambling, but too all of you guys who provided input at my diliberation phase, thanks. It is one awesome little car, and to anyone thinking of signing up... JUST DO IT!

The next addition will be an ipod adaptor, I am thinking of buying from this mob http://www.xcarlink.com.au/ it allows you to keep the ipod click wheel control and choose any playlist unlike the factory unit.

Hope you have not fallen asleep and look forward to meeting up with some Perth fellows when the chance arises.

    Cheers,

    Andrew

Spoke to the dealer on Friday to check that they had received the car and everything looked right in terms of interior colour and options i specified.

What is it with dealers not doing a basic wheel balance before a car is sent out? We pay enough in dealer-delivery charges as it is - surely there's more to it than peeling off the shipping tape and giving it a once over with a chamois!

It generally comes down to supervision. The jobs generally get done but if it was by a junior mechanic and the job wasn't watched or even checked (mistakenly confused with rework) by the supervisor because there either wasn't enough time or resources (staff). The management fad at the moment is a style called "lean management".... without highly trained staff this theory generally fails as the model just does not work with trainees; i.e. you need enough people to do all the value adding things like keeping customers happy and making sure the quality work is done... a hard thing to do when you run with less than minimum staffing levels.
Managers always seem to over estimate how good their business or processes are so they see QA as being rework and therefore waste. I see this so often

Congrats, and welcome to the club! Sorry to hear that your buying experience wasn't all it should have been, but I'm sure the guys at John Hughes will do their best to rectify the situation.

I'll be keen for a Perth cruise soon. The guys (mostly Gti owners) over at golfmkv.com seem to hold regular cruises, so it will be worth keeping an eye out over there.

Oh and watch out for the mod bug, once you've caught it, you can't shake it!

                    Just got a New GTI

                    Hi,

I just got my new red GTI two weeks ago....

                    LOVE IT....it looks so hot…..

I don’t know much about cars, so what do I need to do to run the engine in… I ask the sales rep, he said I can drive the car how ever I like it.

I through that for new cars, how you should various the speed but keep the rep under 4000rpm for the first 1000km, then between 1000 to 1500km, you took it for a highway run and get the rep to the red line?

Then I can drive it how ever I would.

yep vary the revs but dont rev too high. avoid highways for the first 1500kms as the constant revs and no load is not good for bedding in the rings. other than that enjoy women on this forum are few and far between but dont let that scare you, its usually a positive because everyone is more helpful haha. welcome.

                        Thanks guys.

Yeah the actual VW sales guys at JH are being very helpful. It is just the size of the operation that JH run's which sometimes makes it very impersonal.

The mod bug is something I want to run away from. However I think it will start!! haha.

I will keep at look out at the over forum for a drive. If Im not O/S or flying then count me in.

I still can't help but smile!!

Ah give it heaps. Just avoid having it idle for too long(traffic) or sit at a constant rpm on the highway for the first ~1500kms.

Just make sure its always plenty warm before you put your foot down otherwise you can damage the engine and the turbo (For the rest of it's life/always.. not just while its new)
(Watch that temperature gauge, keep a light foot until it reaches the middle)
