my (almost) 2006 2.0 petrol FSI

Afternoon...
I wonder if you can advise whether this is a good idea (ie. relatively foolproof, or a recipe for $ disaster.)
Having driven the petrol 2.0 FSI MkV Golf auto, I am considering purchasing a used one.
It has done 18,000km in its two year life with a single owner (registered April 2006).
My apprehension relates to having only one year left of warranty... and of it getting pricey to maintain in the next two years (given it will be 3-4 years old in this time).
I have always had new cars... does anyone have experience that can help me?
(Looking at paying around $27,000)

why go for the auto? so much power and efficiency is just lost through the dumb transmission. if you're set on an auto then go for the diesel. the auto in the diesel is actually an automatically shifting manual so you get the benefits of a manual like responsiveness, power and economy but then it also shifts gears for you. you should be able to get a 2.0tdi auto for 30 or less and then you'll also use tonnnnnes less fuel. uh oh time for work gl on your search

Thanks Mischa... got to be auto (I know, I know, I'll learn manual by the next one) and I don't do enough driving to get back the premium for diesel. My main query regards the kms and age - at what stage do Golfs get pricey/unreliable? Obviously it varies, but would this be a good prospect for two years or so?

After a troubled start but well fixed in the end... just had to find a good place.

The car is just so nice to drive, loads of go and just goes around corners no matter what mistakes I make

I had a test drive of a focus TDCI for a week and whilst it is about $15k cheaper it just wasn't as well put together and missed those clever things that come with a VW

We do about 20,000km a year and yes we expect to hit at least 200,000km just like we have in the pulsar but in style

50000 haha you could buy a tonka truck and it'd last you that much

i plan on keeping mine till theres no more fuel on earth to power it ie: 500,000kms or more

btw i was suggesting the diesel cuz it gets the better auto tranny, not because of the fuel economy.

I believe that you can extend the warranty by another 2 years after the initial warranty runs out - don't know the cost though.

$1500 sounds about right - but ouch! Is this recommended - are Golfs out of warranty money eaters, generally? I'd say I'd get it to 30,000km in 1 year (when warranty expires), 42,000km in 2 years, 54,000 in 3 years -> sell it on.
