  • Cloth to leather interior upgrade, anyone done it?

    Hi all,
Just bought a complete GTI leather interior including door trims from a wrecker in good condition, is it a big deal to replace the back seats and door trims? Anyone done this and can comment any hints?
    Cheers,

I've pulled my back seats up, not very hard to do, few mins, the door trims aren't hard either, watch some youtube videos on the door cards though, if I remember correctly once you undo the screws you have to lift it up off some clips?!? been a while since I needed to move them.

Why did you choose to go to leather? What are you doing with your cloth interior?

A pattern seems to be forming...

Always liked leather, just weren't any available with leather when I was after one.
Not sure about what to do with the tartans - cheap sale I reckon.

Wow, big move. The factory option leather in the MkV is mostly vinyl with cheap PVC treated hide on a few upper surfaces.

Can't believe anyone actually paid money for it. I'd happily change out the sweaty pleather for tartan cloth but it is a PITA when you have the seat heaters.

I replaced my seats recently, and as has already been said replacing the seats is quite straight forward, 4 bolts for each front seat, and iirc only 1 bolt for the rear.

I found an online tutorial which was really helpful, just do a search.

The one stumbling block was the front seat airbag connectors, they changed shape around 2007 so in my case my 2008 seat airbag connector plugs wouldn't fit into my 2005 airbag connector sockets.

It's okay if the connectors are left unplugged for a while, but you'll get a warning light on your dash. The remedy was to have the plugs removed and the wires crimped together (there are three wires per seat and the wires differ in colour from the later seats).

I started a thread about this at the time I changed my seats over.

Some other bloke has done it. That's how I've ended up with gti tartans for my tdi! Was a simple install once you know what you are doing (I have no electric or heated front seats so it was a straight swap). Did need to do some soldering for the airbag cables though!

Back and passenger in new condition, drivers door upper RHS kidney area (the support surround) tip has material scuffing and a bit of fluffing from wear. I'll get an image for you tonight but feel free to PM an offer

Sorry all, the guys at the wreckers have said they will let me do the swap at their factory in Cambellfield VIC, thus saving me from hiring a van to collect and no where to store a complete interior in my small apartment and working in my small undercover parking area. So I will have available a full set of GTI tartans once removed from my car next Sunday, and the wreckers do not want them so will put the complete set in the bin. If there is anyone that needs them come and help and they are yours, if not a box of beer will suffice. I can't transport or install so you need a van or ute etc.

Pic of damage on driver's seat door side:

The back and passenger seats are all like new no marks or damage, includes full door trims.
Let me know if anyone is interested.
                  Cheers,
                  Cheddo.

I upgraded the seats in my gti to full leather a few years ago. It was one of the best decisions I ever made, made a huge a difference. I had someone from the forum help me out install them. Details are in my thread:

Maybe you have my old tartan seats, does the driver seat have a small hole on the bolster?

Nope. No holes in mine. They were in extremely good condition and picked them up fairly cheap on eBay.

Do I need to swap seat belt connections due to canbus errors etc?
