  • Will my MKV GTI ever be error free?

    Hi Guys

Just ran another scan to try and fix my battery drain issue with my CAN-Gateway and I seem to have errors to no end - Some new, some may be caused by myself; however, still come back after clearing them.

    Note:
    - I unplugged my battery yesterday; however, have been for a drive prior to doing this
    - Radio error may be because I had removed the fuse for my Radio to try and see if this was causing the battery drain.
    - I have a L series gateway which I replaced for the RCD510; however, the battery drain still seems to be present
    - I now as of today have coolant leaking from the car, front drivers side there is a rather large puddle of pink liquid
    - Module 61-Battery Modul - I had a look through here and there are some things in the long coding that are not ticked that I thought should be. Could it be that these should have been ticked by myself when changing the gateway? The previous gateway did not have any 61-Battery Modul options.

Anyone got any suggestions as to what all these may be?

Mate your codes for the radio and voltage terminal 30 are from disconnecting the fuse and the battery respectively.

In terms of the battery drain, your vehicle does not have a battery monitor so your coding of the gateway should reflect this. Obviously the coding already in it is from a much newer (golf VI- VII) with start stop functionality. If the gateway thinks it has a monitor it will not shut the car down as it is not seeing all the info it wants to enable the car to sleep.

The coolant leak form around the O/S/F region with out seeing the car cannot say 100%, but the water pump is your most likely cause here. I recommend replacing this and putting a new timing belt kit on, the current belt will be contaminated.

      Hi Ben

Thank you very much for this detailed response!

Ok so if I clear the code for the engine voltage module, it should not return? Radio code, I understand that is my doing.

In regards to the battery monitor, I thought this may be the reason the car is never going to sleep. How do I disable this battery monitor module? I don't think I can un-tick it in the installation list, it's greyed out.... (I will have to check again tomorrow)

In regards to the coolant leak, I guess I will need to bring it to a service centre for this as I am not skilled enough to do this. Do I really need to replace the timing belt, I only had this done 3 years ago as I was told it was needed at 5 years or 105,000km. How much should I expect this to cost?

Ignore the battery monitoring fault. It won't affect anything else. If you can delete it, great.

As for the coolant leak, I'd hedge a bet or two on the radiator. I've replaced a few now, from various causes.

If it wont let you de select battery monitor from the list then you will have to recode the module rather than installation list coding. Failing that possibly a software update.

When your belt was replaced did they do the pump then?
I can only recommend replacement of the belt kit as in order to replace the pump 1. The belt is removed, tensioner and belt now are over stressed if reused. And 2nd if the pump has been leaking for a while or alot then the belt can be comprimised.
I can only speak from experience in the vag network.

Depending on wherr you go the prices can vary ALOT. Some places will undercharge you and cut corners when repairing. Or overcharge because they dont exactly know what is involved.
From what I have seen from a dealer pov $1000 is the ball park when a 105k service and t/belt replacement.

The radiators generally failed on the n/s from the retaining clip for the fan harness. Not to say a radiator wont fail. Just from a word description pump fits your description.

FYI yes the interval is 105k, the time has been increased to 7 years (falls inline with 105k)

            Hi Ben

Thank you very much for the detailed response again! I had an accident. At the end of 2012 which involved parts of the front of the car including the radiator etc. I know they removed The radiator, pressure tested it and said it was ok. I am hoping that they didn't reattach a hose properly and now this is what is causing it... We will see.

In regards to the battery regulator, so is it a possibility that it is continuously searching for this 61 battery modul and not finding it and therefore draining the battery over 2 weeks? I have a micro-can cable, is it possible for me to do a software update on this gateway or alternatively put my original can gateway back in and do a software update on that? That is revision E.

            Thanks again!

It is definitely possible that due to it looking for the monitor and possibly other information its not receiving the gateway is not going into sleep mode. Until the coding issue is resolved it is impossible to know 100%
I cant say for sure about the software update as been part of vag I have only done svm's via a vas tester using the online servers.
Other than this I am not sure of the requirements to flash other modules other than engine.

Hmmm ok - well when I coded the gateway originally, I followed the instructions at my-gti.com and basically copied the installation list from my old gateway. Is there anyway I can find out what "Coding issues" exist or to determine exactly how it should be coded? Do I need to put my old gateway back in and do it that way?

I would try putting old gateway back in. Extract long coding. And input that into new one. Otherwise you can ask a dealer to check coding via online service. Other than coding and software versions the only thing left is the hardware. The part # may only be applicable to start stop cars.

                    Thanks Ben

I have decided to go a different route - I have reinstalled the old gateway and am going to ask the dealer to update it based on the following information. It should be possible as I have 1K0-907-530-E.

                    Navigation System (RNS510) Retrofitting - Ross-Tech Wiki

Thanks so much for your help...

I have one more question, after installing my old gateway again, I was looking through the options and noticed that Tires Pressure sensor was unticked... when I ticked this it gave me a communication error saying no communication with the module... Isn't this weird? My 2005 MKV GTI has tire pressure sensors from factory. There is a button above the gear stick and when I press it to reset the pressure sensors there is a chime... why would this not be ticked?

Yea its worth a shot. I have done a similar process before during the changeover period on the software from factory.

For your tyre pressure monitoring. I could go into the details but basically there is two forms of tyre pressure monitoring. The version on your gti uses the abs for pressure monitor and not 'pressure sensors'.
The abs uses wheel speed to calculate the relative pressure differences. Hence it needs a significant drop in pressure to bring up the warning.
The second style uses a stand alone module and individual sensors in each wheel to actually measure the pressure.

Thanks for this info ben, that helps.

So I went to the dealer today to get the software on my CANGateway updated as well as report what I believe to be a coolant leak and they have come back with the following:

                        Navigation System (RNS510) Retrofitting) - Ross-Tech Wiki
                        - I have a coolant leak from the Coolant Distributer....??
                        - I have a leak (oil i believe) from the Rocket Cover Gasket...???
                        - My car makes a strange whaling sound when going left at 30-40 degrees at over 70km/h (i.e. freeway ramp)

I am not sure why I am having so many problems with a GTI that has just done 70,000km...is this normal?

Also, I am waiting for a quote, what should this cost, does anyone know?

I don't want to be 'that guy' (username suggests otherwise) but isn't this just standard VW quality?

Rocker cover gasket - Not very hard to do, you would be able to do it yourself. (on a mk5) I bet it is only weeping and probably wont need attention for quite awhile, just the dealer trying to upsell.

Coolant distributor is new to me? A service advisor should have explained that to you, although they are about as useful as tits on a bull.
The strange whaling sound, could it perhaps be tyre related? (feathered edges?)

I agree the rocker cover is an easy repair. Only thing to really worry about is not over tightening the bolts as it then creates a leak :p working in a dealership and without been able to see the car there is a chance it is a minor leak at this point in time. As a dealership we are expected to report any fault we notice when working on a car regardless of the customers complaint as long as it is noticeable during a repair.

The only thing I can think of in terms of a 'coolant disributer' would be the thermostat housing.but it would take some serious tracking of the coolant to leak around the drivers front area. Haha also if it is that bad you would be topping up the coolant every day really.
Tyre wear is a common cause of noise on our cars.there is revised rear alignment settings to rectify this.. but if the noise is only there on corners it is likely to not be tyres.
As a technician I find it frustrating when customers are not given all the facts or a clear description from advisors. It causes too much confusion.
