10L per 100kms on my average daily commute.
A lot less on the highway though. usually in the 7s. So a mix with a lot of highway driving tends to bring u down into the 9s
9.7l/100km average over the last 12000km. Reflashed with Bluefin, and nearly 100% city driving. Reflash on average doesn't seem to make any difference to consumption.

I used to drive a Euro, reflashed with power chip, seen some improvement of the fuel comsumption, on highway i manage to get 720km before the empty fuel indicator on, city drive aprrox 600km..
Before I put the exhaust on my APRd GTI manual I would average 9.1 per 100 on my 10 km trip home and with the exhaust I get 9.8. On long drives on the highway I average 7.9 per 100.

Woops, misread the original post, I should point out mine is manual not DSG.
As others have said, if anything, you get an improvement in fuel consumption when "chipped". You use more fuel when you put your foot down, but you generally don't need to put your foot down as hard, so it all seems to balance out.
I get around 400km to the tank around town (I live on a fun twisty road) and around 700km on the highway before my brain tells me to disregard the trip computer's 100km to go thing and fill up.
If we baby it we can get low 8s around town, but usually in the low 9s. Remember, Canberra's traffic is pretty free flowing, or at least the routes we take to work.
A return trip to Sydney will typically be low 7s, with the cruise set to an indicated 120-125km/h. Although on one occasion we returned a 6.7l figure, according to the MFD.

Damn man you must have a heavy right clog, I get 550-580km out of mine, driving mostly on the West Gate freeway and giving it some stick whenever I can. Same '06 GTI with DSG.
In traffic I am very light footed however. I exceeded Hyundai's claimed fuel efficiency in my last car
Just doing some rough maths, I'm doing ~10l/100km for 550km (WELL into the GTI's "reserve" which I believe to be ~8l), so for you to only get 400km you must be doing ~15l/100km which I would have to say is well above anything I have ever heard from a GTI owner, except for track days. Are you running 98 octane fuel?
Yep, BP Ultimate. The GTI is almost always driven around town, but there's about 3km of downhill twisties on the way to the road in to town and and the same up hill on the way home. It's driven as a manual and rarely gets above 4th. I'll be the first to admit that it gets a fair razzing. Imagine 6km of your own twisty mountain road every day...
I fill up early, though... so that's 400km to most of a tank, 470km before the light comes on and it beeps at me and I get angry because it always happens after I've started coming home and the petrol station is behind me.
On the highways, though... it's awesome. Don't thrash it, and it won't drink. Drive it in manual mode with cruise control on, and it's pretty good. Not as good as the Q7 but it's a hell of a lot more fun!
If you want to know true fuel comsumption you need to fill the tank to the brim each time, then calculate. Also the MFD is usually pretty optimistic on most VAG vehicles (possibly as a marketing tool ? )
