Vacuum Pump Leaking Oil

Thought I would get the CV Boot problem out the way first and then tackle another problem that came up at service.

They stated that a Vacuum Pump was leaking oil and would need to be replaced. Having done a bit of a search it seems that once it has a leak you do need to replace the whole unit. OK with that.

Price quoted was 850 odd.

I was wondering if this is the domain of a VW expert or can it be done by a general mechanic?

Should I leave this to the experts or just find a mechanic that will do it cheaply. I am happy to pay if it should be done by VW, but at the same time I seem to be seeing very different prices between VW Dealer and anyone else.

Hey mate it is a fairly simple task however like any job it can be easily butchered if done wrong. I have seen a few done really well by non vag workshops and also some worrying ones.

If you have a trusted mechanic who has done good quality work previous then by all means if it means you will save $$$

I would think even three bolts out of my know how. I expect they need torquing as well. Maybe it is a cost i will have to bear

I just repaired a BMW with very similar vac pump, and the seal I used was the one for the oil filter housing, its slightly thicker and worked really well. Saved fortune on vac pump, same goes for the MK5 pump. No need to replace the whole pump for that, some have other issues too but that price is pretty high, Nor a hard job if swapping out whole part has offset D though so that has to be right otherwise no worries
