  • Blotchy Paint Job

Last week i polished up the car and noticed the paint on the bonnet is very blotchy, a mate who restored classic cars had a look at it on the weekend and also reckons its a pretty bad piece of work from the factory.

Has anyone noticed anything on their cars similar, and what do u reckon vw will do about it?

Funny this comment should come up on the forum now as I was only discussing this very thing with a paint shop guy on Saturday after booking my RS VW MkV in for some work (new front guard) starting today.

He specifically noted that VW use a very fine metallic flake (for wont of a better word) in the Reflex Silver colour, he said it is difficult to get an even texture. He pointed out that the colour will change depending on how the light hits it.

Personally, I did not notice any real paint variations in mine except for a small area on the front guard where the silver texture seemed to change density, however this was only noticeable under fluro lights in a garage when the car was spotlessly clean and it really took some looking at to notice at all, something only an owner would notice.

Personally I thought the paint was fine from the factory however I feel the panel fit could have been better since the Golf is one of the few cars on the road that has bolt on door skins and the panel fit is therefore easier to achieve.

Unfortunately, Silver is probably the worst colour in the world to achieve an even, solid look, something to do with the metallic content. You're right though, you should expect a better finish on a Euro car but I doubt you will have much luck having VW do anything about it, you may be lucky if you whine loud and long enough to them though.
I used to be indecisive - now I'm just not sure....
