is anyone familiar with gearbox leaks? i ran a search and it seems to be something from mk4 but nothing much about how it is caused.. i'm just interested to know the mechanical side of things so that if they come back and say i've done something to it, i will know if they are being reasonable or they're just trying to get me to pay up...

and would anyone be able to speculate what would need to be done (from my point of view) to get the gearbox leaking? like what sort of impact/accident are we talking about because i certainly have no recollection of anything odd happening during the course of my driving...

    *sigh*
When you go and see the car, take a mechanic friend or third party(Who is a qualified mechanic) to see the car with you. Ask if you can see problem and where it is leaking from, and ask to see it on the hoist. If they won't let you see it, then they have something to hide, and say that to them. Ask Questions about what might lead to something like this, and if it is a common fault.

How many kilometers has your car done? What are the normal driving conditions you have from day to day? If things start going pear shaped, get the Department of Fair Trading involved. Keep a COMPLETE record of conversation with dates and times, and people spoken to, and what the conversation was about(This has saved my arse a couple of times dealing with dealers).

The dealer you bought it from won't cover you with a courtesy car?
If it is being fixed under warranty, I'd consider that an admission of fault and ask them to cover me with a car (christ, gimme a hyundai, anything!) while it is being rectified.

Sounds like they're taking the piss as you're not a local customer... therefore not likely to take your car to them for servicing?

      ...which Perth Dealer is it?
      1 of 2 I'd presume.

tinto- the dealer it's being serviced at isn't the dealer i bought it from because i bought it from country. i don't really think it's the dealership's fault (in the sense of purposefully keeping a courtesy car from me) but i do feel that VAG should do more to offer me a courtesy car/rental reimbursement, seeing as it's looking like a warranty issue that arose from manufacturing fault.

apparently the dealer that it's serviced at has a backlog of courtesy vehicles till next week so i don't think it's anything personal- although the sales guy who tried to sell me a car at the dealership did say that if i ever serviced my car there it wouldn't be a priority because i didn't buy the car from them...

blitzen- thanks for those tips, unfortunately my mech friend can't make it as he works full time at a shop so unless he can offer me a friend of his, i don't really have much chance at going down and making a difference in asking to see the car... they'll call my bluff (i.e. lack of knowledge) soon enough.

i do city driving and the car has done about 2900- in my opinion average kms. of course seeing as it's new i've definitely made more excuses to drive it around than i usually would

no one has any input on why things like that may happen? the dealer said that i might have gotten into an accident or something hit the under carriage but my mech seems to think that's pure rubbish....

Even if you dont think you will know what youre looking at I still think its worth you going and asking to see the leak with the car on a hoist.
If they are accusing you of hitting something then there should be evidence of this.

You will be able to see if the leak is from a gasket joint or from the housing.
If its from a gasket then its simpily a failed gasket and they cant possibly blame you for this.

If it appears to be coming from the housing then is there a crack there where its leaking from.?
If there is a crack then is there evidence of the housing being impacted by something to cause the crack.
If there is no crack yet the oil is mysteriously coming from a spot on the housing then it could be porosity in the casting. Again not your fault.

If they are claiming you hit something then I'd want to see the marks on the housing where the impact occurred.

Also when your there looking at it on the hoist take photos with a digital camera of the leak, the area around the leak, the housing and generally under the car in that area.
It might be enough to make them think this guy is goinig to go to a lawyer and not bend over and pay for this so we will fix it under warranty.

          Just my thoughts.

If i lived near you I'd be happy to come and have a look at it with you.
          Anything is worth a try.

          Good Luck.

When I've booked into the dealership before I've always been told I'd need to book in three weeks in advance if I wanted a loan vehicle. I think it's a genuine case of them only have a few loan cars. Tinto - don't worry, when you go to the other dealership you do get a Hyundai or Mitsubishi loan car!

I agree with Logzy, if it's a hairline fracture or a leaking seal they can't really blame you unless they think somebody has been under there and over / under tightened something, but that would be difficult to prove without a sheared off bolt or something along those lines. If the transmission has hit something, you should be able to see some physical evidence, and I would have thought other parts of the car would scrape first?

I believe that there is only one charging for courtesy car......... Absolutely.
I have a little list for them to look at, at the next service....... not stamping my log book, again funny nosies from drivers side window, paint came off on one of power windows switch.... rattle from a center console, plasctic cover cames off rear view mirror
I usually keep a rag under the bonnet when checking oil levels and guess what..... at the last service they took it out and binned it.
Second thing I have a card that says I am in titled to 10% discount of servicing and part when paying cash but they told me only of labor charge.
I have searched high and low to find what does 10% apply to exactly but I couldn't. then they forgot to take discount out when I was paying for service.Luckuly I had some extra cash on me.

              It just makes me mad

I had a noise there too (like a scratchy rattle/buzz) it was the "air bag assembly in the door pillor" - they re-foamed the trim and re-assembled and now she is quite.

Have you contacted the dealer that you bought the car off?
You paid good money for the pre delivery and it obviously wasnt performed very well. I havent heard of so many problems on a Mk5.
You originally said that it was 1.5 months old? Oil leak your fault? Were the panels under the camotor and gearbox at all marked or damaged?
                  Sounds ridiculous to me.

                    Update

                    Okay.
So I called my dealer on Thursday (after sending the car in on Wed), explained the situation with the courtesy car etc. and my disappointment with the service in terms of getting a car that was LEAKING..

very pleased with them cos right after the phonecall, the service manager called me an hour later, got all the details off me again and said he'd be in touch because it's not fair that the city dealer said i wasn't a priority customer and he'll take care of it.

                    he did.
got a call back in the afternoon saying the car was all fixed, i could pick it up. city dealer didn't even call me for that, my dealer did. he also said that i was able to claim my reimbursement for the hire car and they'll cover it, no worries.

went to the dealership, apparently their answer for me was that my car may have been damaged in transit- the seal of the gearbox was faulty. apparently the gearbox itself is fine it's just that seal that was bad. no idea how to check if that's correct, will have to take their word for it.
i just hope they did everything to rectify it instead of patching it up quickly and giving it back to me.

as for the side panels of the inside rear doors, they said it's probably the tinter's fault, they're not doing anything about it. that's possible, i never thought of that.
and they fixed up the missing screw on my driver's door too.

have sent receipts back to my dealer for reimbursement, hopefully they give me the whole thing because i can't get any money off for returning the car any earlier. $120 is nothing to them anyway...

thanks everyone! logzy, i didn't end up checking up on the car because they fixed it up too quickly!

                          yet another leak!

you won't believe this. i don't believe it.

brought it to my mech, he checked it and found that the turbo oil drain is leaking- from the fitting that goes into block. anyone knows the seriousness of this?

any thoughts about what could have happened? i'm going to get back to my dealer (again!) and see what they have to say about it but it's just not very cool cos these things should've been picked up at inspection...

This is like....the fourth thread I've read from start to finish regarding stupid little faults in mk5's fresh from delivery. I'm not saying I told you so en13, but for ANYONE in the future awaiting delivery for a Mk5 I'd take a mechanic to check it over and tell the dealer you're taking it straight to his shop before you drive it just to make sure they've done their job - cause it sounds like they hardly do.

Good luck dude, lay into them hard if they try and fuss you around again. I would.
