  • dsg clutch replacement recommended after service

Our service guy recommended the 6 speed dsg clutch be replaced asap after 85k service on jetta my9.
My wife and I haven,t noticed any problems so are wondering why the recommendation. Is it something that computer analysis checks
Don,t want the expense if it can be avoided

He must of given a reason why?? Need more info to get a legitimate answer. From my experience shuddering is the only reason they require replacement otherwise if it's a six speed only oil and filter change at 60,000km.

If it is driving well, I wouldn't touch it?

      VW dealer or independent?

I would be asking for a detailed explanation.

This is a huge job and will cost $$$$ so he better have a damn good explanation for it. If you dont like his answer then get a second opinion maybe from a VW dealer. It will cost you a lot less then the clutch change!

          thanks
          service guy is independent
quoted $1500 for automatic clutch, + 5 hrs labour + $550 for DSG service
the car hasn't had a DSG service yet (let sleeping dogs lye theory)
Im going to give him a ring to discuss tomorrow.

Clutch replacement is only warranted if your car suffers from shudder or difficult reverse gear selection.....even then a adjustment of the clutch pack is the first step unless a hard fault is logged. DSG service for $550 is overpriced....our charge is $320.....ask for a bit more proof showing you why the clutch is required. A sure way to damage your transmission is not servicing as required ....sleeping dogs on a DSG is crazy............you may as well not change you engine oil ....both do the same job and both components rely on clean oil to continue operating. My suggestion is to do an oil change asap along with a replacement filter.....have a good look at the old filter and see how contaminated it is with clutch material as this may serve as a guide.

Exactly what volksMuller said (I'm assuming this is Steve?)

You need to service the gearbox just like you would for the engine. At 85K kms I'm guessing it just needs a service.

My Brother's '08 Jetta has over 135k kms and has never had the clutches replaced. He had it serviced not long ago for about $300-350, certainly not over $500.

I spoke to service guy today.

Apparently that recommendation to replace clutch came for my wife mentioning that on very rare ocassions on sarting the motor would shudder and not start. Subsequently it would start ok. i've only experienced it myself once or twice in 3 years. Apparently that can be a sign of the clutch going. However while drivingneither of us have experienced any shuddering.

the guy said the clutch if held together by components he likened to an elastic band and after the shudder if it recentres then its ok.
I don't think the service guys actually experienced the shuddering and the initialexplanation by service guys to her mentioned it might be something to do with the flywheel engaging.

Anyway I'm goin to hope for the best and get a DSG service and probably a timing belt replacement next service @ 100K and this will probably cost close enough to to $2K so will be plenty enough for a scheduled service.

                  Thanks for advice.

Shudder on start-up wouldn't be related to the DSG clutches.

the difficult start is NOT related to clutches as stated......is this a TDI ? there are several reasons for a stutter start ...more info required

If you ask me this guy doesnt understand what a DSG is. When he says its like rubberbands holding together maybe hes thinking of a CVT. A DSG is like a manual with two clutches that are operated by a computer. Might be best to switch mechanics for this car to someone a little more experienced with them and also get your DSG serviced asap.
