  • New R32 Owner With a Question

    G'day all,

New to VDub owner here. Picked up a newish R32 (a demo with 20k on the clock) last Thursday and have this funny ear-ear grin on my dial that won't seem to go away

Went for a quick squirt up and over Nebo-Glorious (any one from Brissy will know it) on the day after - what an amazing experience - this thing is a beast.

My question is this - have any other R32 owners experienced any front tyre rub during hard cornering. I get a fairly loud and constant tyre rub under hard left hand cornering (I'm talking very hard cornering here - normal to even fairly agressive turns are rub-less), it's only when really on it that the rub starts. Right handers are so far silent up to my limits (which I suspect are way short of the cars).

    Comments welcome,

    Steve

    Hi Steve!

Awesome ride, welcome to the dub club!

Love the Nebo glorious run, I live at ferny Grove, so a lap is all too easy for me can only imagine how much better it is in an awd R32 beastie.

What do your front tyres look like? Is the wear pattern even on both fronts? Has the front wheel taken an impact ( or is the spare showing signs of a hit? I'd be looking for any signs of damage, and then perhaps a trip to a decent suspension place for a front end check. I assume it drives and breaks evenly with hands off the wheel?

Hope to see you around the traps, and if you come up behind me on the mountain run, give me a wave as you scream by!

Welcome aboard Steve - congrats on the purchase!

Jack it up at the front and check to make sure they have removed the chocks out of the suspension. You'll see them straight away. I suspect they havn't removed them (like they do with so many other new cars).

        G'day Steve,

        Nice ride

Have not reached those limits yet myself (still on run in) but Wheels this month reported something similar - tyre rub on hard cornering.

Seeing as it is still under warranty...take it back and let them sort it out!

And for God's sake - get a Euro plate.

G'day mate. Can't help you with the suspension issues but thought I'd just say welcome to the forums and nice ride.

              Congrats mate....

              Hi mate,

Congrats on the new car. Nice to have another 5dr R32 on board

I don't exactly baby my car and have ripped it around a few corners and haven't come across any tyre rub. Maybe I'm not getting my car sideways enough though??

Welcome Steve. As with all on the forum, it's great to see another R32 in the mix ... especially here in Brisneyland. The Nebo run is a beauty ... but rather heavily policed - still ... I'm sure you weren't breaking the law.

See you at one of the Get-togethers sometime.

Thanks to all for the welcome,

@cogdoc - wear seems even on both sides - steers and brakes in a perfectly straight line "hands off"

@graeme86 - point taken - euro plate on the way

@DaveMack - Get-togethers - what, where and when be they???

                    from Wheels:

"Some low-speed ride choppiness is understandable, but the fundamental strains imposed by the R32s larger wheel/tyre combination and 20mm lowered sports suspension become obvious under corner load as tyres rub and graunch on inner guards"

                      Read something similar in MOTOR
"In contrast, the R32 rolls over a lot more, allowing it's weight to sit squarely on the outside wheels. You'll even hear the front tyre rub against the inside guard if you encounter a descent bump when the suspension is loaded up."

Sounds normal for the R32, not that it should be but thats what I have found with VW cars. Like you find something that is questionable and then a response like "Yeah thats normal" from VW dealerships

                      Cheers

GTGs are things like the Dyno meet next weekend. I'm sure you would be welcome to dyno your car or just come along and meet some of the Brisneyites from this forum and have a sausage sizzle as you're deafened by roaring exhausts and spat at by improperly fitted Diverter Valves.

                        See here: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/newf...ad.php?t=13616

We also get together for cruises in the country (should be one due soon-ish), photo-shoots or go to VW or German Car days or even track days.

I'm in an R32, and get front wheel tyre rub consistently on a particular corner i take on my way home. There is a hump in the road as you come into a roundabout, if i am braking hard and turning, and go over the bump, i get tyre rubbing.

Hmmm - it's beginning to look a lot like "normal behaviour for an R32" but I'll raise it with the dealer later this week when it goes in to get it's new windscreen and bluetooth module. (Windscreen had a non-repairable stone chip and is being replaced without charge) - BT module has to be paid for

Now for another question - I'll need tyres in the next 10k or so - recommendations please - it currently has Conti Sport Contact 2s and I want at _least_ as much grip as those, although a bit more quietness wouldn't go amiss.

Evo magazine just handed back their long term tester. They put top of the line Goodyear Eagle F1s onto it. Said they were the best.
