  • Aircon craped itself

My aircon has imploded. Took the car back to Highway VW at springwood and they told me the compessor was stuffed. Was hoping for a simple fix on the spot however that's not to be. They have to order new compressor from Germany and it will take two days to fix. No idea on how long it will take to get to Oz.
Apparently they have had a few do this in the MKV's. The young mech who told me of the problem said they have to flush the whole system as bits get through it and if its not flushed it can chew out the new compressor when fitted. Not to confident of this myself so will have to wait and see. Maybe I can wiggly my way into a R32 loner for two days. haha. Still a pain in the A--- though.
Anyway on the way home I saw a black Gti on a flatbed tow truck so felt a little better about my lot. At least I can Drive mine.

Ouch that's nasty. Sadly Highway have no R32s at the moment aside from two that are about to be delivered.
Was down there today wanting to see if the space saver spare from the MkV will fit in the bootwell for the MkIV. Apparently the MkV spare can fit over the front brakes on the MkV so it should be right for the MkIV as well.

I thought the mk4's had a 5x100 stud pattern and the mk5's had a 5x112(i think), or are the R32's different.

          Yep you're right.
Well there's that idea is down the gurgler now. Looks like it's back to the Audi S3 solution.

Had the same thing happen to mine a month or so ago.....there should be compressors in the country, but might take them a while to get their hands on one (i got told the same thing). Yep when the compressors go there is a whole bunch of things they need to do/replace including flush/tx valve etc

Is common and it sucks but at least you can drive it and its not the height of summer!

They had mine done in 1 day by the way.

Don't worry, your not alone with this problem.

Mk5 A/C Compressor's s@#tting themselves are as common as the sun coming up in the morning & going down at night!

The normal procedure is to degas the sytem, remove the TX Valve & fit a modified one with the gut's taken out of it & flush the entire A/C system.
Then replace the Compressor, Condensor(Receiver dryer is part of the Condensor on Mk5's), Then replace the TX Valve, regas & check.

The compressor are a very poorly designed unit thats for sure.

The replacement ones are superseeded & are better designed both internally & the clutch itself. Don't know about the new, new car's. Will have alook when I get a chance.

                  Aircon craped itself

Mine hasn't yet, but this is what I noticed during drive home from work on the hot WA summer days.
First of all it take time to cool car interior down. Once done I revert to recycle
and while driving it blows nice cold air. Have temp set at around 20 C. Once I stop at the traffic light I notice drop in the temp of cold our coming out of the vents.
Has anyone experienced similar, shall I call it, problem or this is just the way VW's air cons are set up to cool/work

I had my Air Conditioning system dump ill its refrigerant twice in my Polo GTI, and am still waiting to get the parts in after 8 weeks in the height of a Darwin wet season(getting the Evaporator and TX valve replaced).
Apparently, that A/C system is a big weak point in the Polo too, but I really think that the VW A/C systems are poorly suited to the extremes of the Australian environment.

                      Mines Jan 2005 Build....

I read somewhere they had changed the compressor manufacturer in later models but not sure how true it is...

Good news the car goes in tomorrow to get the bloody aircon fixed. When they phoned to say they had the parts in and could do the job in two days time, I was as happy as a pig in Sh-- . I asked for a loner for the two days they will have the car and was told that they could not do this for three weeks as they only have three.... Bu----. After telling the lovely lady, that called, what I thought about that idea I asked to be transfered to Robert ( The Boss ) VW new car sales and asked if he could lend me a demo or something. No problems says Robert. Gotta love his work. So can get my beast fixed ASAP. I asked for a R32 but none available.... maybe I can get a V10 "toerag" me thinks HaHa. I dont really care anyway at least I"II have may cay back by the weekend. Cant give enough praise for Robert Highway VW springwood and a nice guy as well.

                              I've just found this thread.
I'm also a victim of the faulty aircon in the MKV: Lucky it seems to have the problem just before end of warranty so got the VW dealer to look at it on the last warranty service.

Although we took our Golf to VW dealer to fix the aircon, they sub contracted the job out to a 3rd party.

The dealer said that we get 12 months warranty on the replacement - but 9 months later and the aircon is really performing poorly again!

Should I take the car back to the dealer who arranged the sub contractor under VW warranty (note: I'm really unimpressed with that dealer's service), straight to the sub contractor - or can I go to another dealer and get them to look at it and be covered by the 'warranty' on the replacement?
