GTI DSG Issues?

Good day all,

Currently looking at upgrading to a MKV GTI DSG, preferably 2007 onwards. My mechanic has told me to steer clear of DSG cars as the amount of problems he has come across with them.

Anyone here has had problems with their DSG cars?

It's not that common these days.

Most of them have all been fixed.

They generally start acting up early on in life. So if it drives fine now, it'll be ok.

This what I believe. It it was going to break, it would have done so before now. Just keep on top of the oil changes. I would go DSG over manual, if I had a choice. And tune whatever car it was in

I use to think mine was full of problems. The crowd that did my tune told me that the Mechatronics is stuffed and I should chase for a replacement. I went back to the dealership, the RAA (who did the PPI) and another independent who all cleared the vehicle. No sign of clutch wear and no one couldnt replicate the fault when the tune was off.

So i put it down to being a fault with the tune. Manual Mode and Sport are fine, just normal drive mode suffers big clunks when going from 3rd to 4th

I will say this though, you need to adapt the way you drive. I was coming from a slushbox auto setup for nothing but comfort. I had to learn to drop it to manual mode when crawling in traffic to avoid the bunny hop. Also when you brake you need to be sure of it and not ride the brakes in, otherwise you get bunny hopping as well.

If you do a test drive, make it a long one, over 30 mins, I find this is where the heat builds up and potential issues develop. Also, flog it a little bit and then do some bumper to bumper just to make sure.

The dsg isn't too hard to do. I just finished mine with new oil filter and o ring. I also now have the shaubin fill tool. My car has done 101700 and I will plan the next one at 150000. I would prefer to do them early to keep it happy.

Cheers for the input. I've driven 2 already and it's quite a difference between a mk4 gearbox. Haven't driven in traffic. But more long fast roads.

I read up and watched a video about servicing the dsg and it looks pretty straight forward.

Any other mkv dsg gti owners have any input? I'm considering buying a dsg gti with a few kms on it, yet Im still a little concerned. Would love to hear from anyone who has 100k + kms on their mkv dsg gti.. Hopefully this weekend ill take one out for a test drive.

Mate sorry just saw this thread. Did you end up buying a mkv gti dsg last weekend?

For the record my 06 gti dsg has done a tick over 161,000kms drives perfect and always has.

I've got a couple of customers who've hit the 200K mark on their original DSGs.

They drive faultlessly. Both have been serviced every 60,000kms.

HOWEVER... when the car warmed up, it would jerk like crazy when taking off. Did not notice this during the test drive, since the car was probably still cold. The problem was so pronounced that it wasn't even possible to take off slowly without feeling like I was lifting off the clutch too quickly (if it were a manual).

Took it to Kevin Dennis VW and they said the mechatronics unit needed replacing

$3,300 later, the car is now driving very smoothly and no bunny hopping in peak hour traffic anymore.

I guess I'll have to add that to the cost of the car.

Where did you buy the GTI? I'm assuming it was a private sale, otherwise the DSG would have been replaced under warranty. Still, it's a terrible way to be introduced to a great marque for driving.

Did you involve VW during any of the process? I have heard of them offering good will discounts on DSG repairs particularly because yours is only just out of warranty (apparently vw extended the DSG warranty period to 5yrs/150k http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...dsg-80877.html)

It was a private sale. The guy I bought it from seemed really nice and I didn't think much into it. But after a few weeks of driving it, there was no way he didn't know of the problem. Unfortunately, the onus was on me to check the vehicle.

Didn't get VW involved, it was out of warranty, didn't bother pushing.

I'm not really bothered by it, since I got the car pretty cheap for the condition it was in (bar the DSG issue). I just wish the seller told me up front (so that I could haggle a bit more).
