Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Golf GTI Fuel Consumption + Servicing Costs

    Hi there,

I just joined this forum today as I am looking into purchasing a Mk5 GTI.

Was just wanting to get some info from some GTI Owners about the cost of fuel and maintenance...

I obviously know it runs on premium fuel but how much fuel will it use when you put ur foot down?
It says it uses 8L/100km but thats only gonna happen if you drive like a old woman... what can i expect from it if i drive it with a bit of spirit?

also how much does it cost to maintain the car? servicing etc.
I am a bit worried about the reliability also... have heard about the dsg failing and costing several thousand to fix... whats the best way to prevent this... and what are the likelihoods of having major problems with the car?

Quite sure the fuel economy is broken down as follows:

    Urban: 11L/100km
    Highway: 7.8L/100km
    Combined: 8L/100km

Most of my driving is urban so I generally get around 11L/100km

Car service cost estimates can be found here, although everything car related is generally more expensive here in Perth

I have a Mk5 GTI and it uses around 10L/100km. You can get anywhere from 450km-550km per tank of petrol, it just depends how you drive it, when you first get it, you will probably be getting around 450 and once you get over it a bit, and start driving a bit slower you will get around 550.

Service here in Canberra from $250 to $300.. thats just for regular service to change oil and filter. Not sure what the price would be in WA but I'm assuming it would be around that.

Thanks for the reply, How often does it need major services? and how much are they?

Not sure, I think they have split the major service up, so my last service was a regular service it cost $295, just oil and filter change. The one before that was around $500 and that one included all the filters. One before that was a 100,000k service and that one included a timing belt Not sure how much it was coz I bought the car after that was done.
