  • Sourcing and replacing DSG gaiter/boot

Hi guys - when I bought my 07 jetta, the gearshift gaiter had frayed stitching and I want to replace it, but have failed to find a suitable replacement online (stuff on ebay seems to be 'model' specific) short of going to a local dealer and paying a ludicrous amount for OEM

I assume that any golf mk5 dsg gaiter will fit (despite sellers only saying it will fit a specific model eg Grey Stitch Fits VW Golf Plus 05 09 DSG Auto Automatic Leather Gear Gaiter Only | eBay )

Are they hard to replace - take it the knob has to be removed which looks like a PITA!

    Cheers

Take the old one to a motor trimmers & get a new proper (not pu leather) leather one made in whatever colour leather / stitching you want. Heaps nicer than vinyl.

I had one made for my MK3.5 Cabrio & they charged $20 in 2007. A boot like that will be about $40 - $50 in todays dollars.

try Shift boot store - RedlineGoods leather shift boots

I've had similar grief getting a new boot for my manual gearbox! In the end I'm getting one made to fit.

The one I originally ordered looked to me like it was for a DSG car as the shape was rectangular at the base (rather than mine being square) and it was about 40mm too long. It came from the Tuning Shop in the UK and was $20 or so, delivered. The Tuning Shop are on eBay. Another alternative is Mk5.Tuning.Gaiters (I also ordered one from there thinking it would fit). I can safely say that both gaiters were far better quality than the original, even though they didn't fit.
      MY08 Mk5 GT Sport - sold
      MY14 Tiguan 118TSI - sold (Mazda3 SP25GT in its place)
MY16 Golf 7R: sold (Caterham Super 7 and Hyundai i30N in its place)

The place I got mine done was called "The Department of the Interior" Princes Hwy Carlton NSW. I know a few people that have had work done by them. It's cheapest if he has the old one to unpick & use as a pattern.

The other motor trimmers in the area wanted twice as much

For entertainment purposes, I phoned VW Solitaire this arvo to get a price on a new gaiter - was told (as I expected) that the OEM leatherette gaiter is only sold with the plastic surround and the two clips that hold the gaiter----> $600!!!!! And that doesn't include the dsg knob, shifter mech housing etc.

The parts guy laughed as hard as I did at the price their system spat out (after it was double checked). What a joke for a few tiny bits....

Off to the motor trimmer I go (as the parts interpreter also recommended)
