  • Front Fog Lamp Bulb Type

    Hi everyone,

I am in the process of replacing the exterior bulbs around my car as they're getting yellow and quite poor in their lighting output. I am stuck trying to confirm the bulb type for the front fog lamps. So far, I have found 3 different sources listing the bulbs as 3 different types:

    H1 (powerbulbs.com)
    HB4 (carbulbsdirect.com)
    H11 ([Mk5 Golf] Bulb list for MK5 Exterior & Interior - Audio, Electrics and Lighting - uk-mkivs)

Can anyone confirm which type it is I need? I've not taken the fitting apart to check and the bulb type isn't stamped on the glass lens (like the rear licence plate lights).

    TIA.

There are two different types depending on if you have projector or reflector type lights. Quickest way is to take one out and have a look.

Thanks greg32. That explains the confusion.

From taking it apart, it looks like they are HB4 bulbs. I couldn't find any markings but I googled pictures and they match.

Does this mean I have reflector type fogs or projector type?

No, reflector means as you look into the lamp it has a shiny silver reflector around the bulb, projector fog's look black as you look into them (while off of course lol).

I believe only early (2005-6) GTI's had projectors, the rest were reflector the type.

If your car is not a GTI/GT but a Sportline or Pacific (like mine) the fog bulbs are different from a GTI's bulbs (while still reflector housings).

As has been suggested best to unscrew the foglight (easy job) and remove the bulb, just don't touch the bulb (glass part) with your fingers, just touch the fitting.

Ok, thanks Fatherless One. I think mine are silvery, not black. I'll check in the morning.

I knew about not touching the bulb and took everything apart. Once I unclipped the bulb from the connector, I found the HB4u marking.

My car is a MY08 GT Sport so guess it has the same setup as a GTI.
