  • Reverse Sensor problem - Jetta

Hi all, my TFSi Jetta is now 4,400 km old and the drive is still great. This morning however as I was reversing out at my local woolies car park I noticed a constant beep tone coming from the rear of the car when the gear was in reverse. automatically I thought there was something behind the car but both mirror inspection and then to be safe an external physical inspection yielded nothing there. I tried this a few times during the day and something seems to be causing a fault with the reverse sensors.

I've searched the threads (and may have missed something) but cannot find any information on how to trouble shoot this or pin point the exact problem.

Has anyone experienced anything similar or have any pointers on how to sort this out?

I will call my dealer tomorrow but thought I would ask here anyway.

    Cheers
    Tom

    Hey Tom,

Similar thing happend to my golf. I crawled underneath my car to have a look at the sensors from behind the bumper and realised the one of the wires connecting each sensor together had dropped and was touching the exhaust pipe. The heat from the exhaust had melted the plastic sleeving on the wire and exposed the copper, the copper in turn was touching the metal of the exhaust which caused what you have described. A bit of electrical tape and and few snap ties later and it's all fixed. Admittedly if the dealer did the job right when they installed it, this wouldn't have happened.

may not apply to you but i hope it helps.

Thanks for the tip Dooby. I shall take a look under the car and behind the bumper tomorrow. As usual the VW folk did not return my call today.

Sometimes all it takes is a relatively slight incline for the sensors to pick up the road/car park surface and start beeping.

I get this every morning reversing out of my driveway. It freaked me out the first time as the angle is quite small.

        Just a thought.

Cheers.....I did think it was the slope on the road......but problem is still there on perfectly flat road too.....Thanks for the tip.... worth remembering for others.

            Hi All,
just wanted to give you all an update on my reverse sensor problem that I was having. Had the car booked into Barloworld 5 Dock yesterday where they reseted the faulty sensor (which looked like someone had poked it into the bumper) All is well and you would not even know the sensor had been reseated.

I should add I had a very good service experience (touch wood touch gold) from the time I walked in -> to getting the courtesy car (Golf TDI) -> to having a call 3 hrs later letting me now the car was ready -> and then finally picking it up.

The car was detailed and my rims polished.

Great experience and thanks to everyone for their help on this topic.

            Tom
