Tyres GTI

Hi there,

My wife's My09 GTI has just clicked over 40k and the tyres need replacing.

What would you recommended? She certainly does not need high performance quality tyres, however good quality and something that will get her another 40k and something that won't kill the credit card!

Kuhmo KU22s (all rounder) around $170 a tyre for 18" so should be slightly less for 17".

Or spend an extra $20 per tyre I top of that and get kuhmo ku31 (performance)

whatever you do, dont get Pirelli P Zero Mud and Snow. They are absolute ****e. I look like an idiot wheel spinning everywhere

Another vote for the Kuhmo ku22, I have the superseded model and have over 55,000 on them and the new KU22 has a longer life according to Kuhmo. The Ku 31 is a lot softer so not as long life.

I've seen some Kuhmo ku22 for $143. They are for the 91V whilst the GTI came with the 91W. Correct me if i'm wrong, but to pass roadworthy, the car must be fitting the as a minimum the same load rating?

Why not go with michelin pilot sport 3? It should be around $170-$200 a tyre for 17".

Tyres are the only thing connecting the 1400kg mass with the road.

In wet or emergency situations, $20-$50 extra a tyre is easly forgotton, but not a bad permanent damage.

I got 46,000km from a set of KU31. Latest set is just over 36,000km and 2 of them are getting close to the markers.

I found Michelin to wear too fast and Pirelli get noisy over time, but both have slightly better wet grip than Kumho.

That's the same load, 91. The letter is for max speed. V max speed is 240, W is 270. I'm going out on a limb here, but I don't suppose you're wife is planning to go over 240km/hr is she?

Thanks for correcting me sheckster, I did mean to say speed, or V. I was not sure if the speed rating had to be same also? I could not find any definitive information on this point.

She can drive a little fast sometimes, certainly not 240km/h though!

I was told by a reputable tyre shop that load rating is what they go by, but your safest bet is to ring vw assist.

Safest bet is to contact your state roads authority (eg: NSW is Roads & Maritime Services). The RACV will know the rules as well.

In NSW the Load Rating is sacred & the speed rating has some wiggle room if you put a small warning sticker on the windscreen. As you are in VIC I won't link you as it's irrelevant.

As a fantastic all-rounder I'd fit Michelin PS3 or the Primacy. The comment that Michelin gives bad mileage comes as a complete surprise as I've never known a Michelin to give poor mileage - quite the opposite. I've just got 75,000km out of my Primacy & they still had a bit left. Many of my mates run PS# & they are getting 30,000km driving like nobs - the more sedate drivers are getting 45,000km+.

Australian roadworthy regulations stipulate that any replacement tyre fitted to a passenger vehicle built after 1972 must:

- be rated for a speed of at least 180 km/h; and

- have a load rating that is at least equivalent to those of the original tyres.


So for a Mk5 Golf fitted with 225/45 R17 tyres, that means a load rating of at least 615 kg, which corresponds to a load index of at least 91.

A speed rating of 180 km/h corresponds to a speed symbol of S.

Therefore, as far as the regulations are concerned, the fitment of tyres with a speed rating of 240 km/h (speed symbol of V) is acceptable.

I had a look at the Kuhmo website and could not find, at least with the KU22 a tyre with only a V rated speed besides the 205/55 R 15,
all the 225/45 R 17 and 225/40 R 18 had 91W - 94W

I sold my previous car factory fitted with michelin primacy HP, made in france, 42,000km on the clock, 2 tyres had 4-5mm of thread depth & the other 2 had 5-6mm.



New is around 8mm.
