hmm interesting, the guys I deal with believe otherwise. Its has to be in the car to program things which means their computer will see two distinct VINs in different locations so it really depends on what they allow to happen when its like this. I hope you are right though and I'd be interested to see what happens because it would save people a lot of money

I'll keep you updated, it goes in on Tuesday. I just hope they can do it, before I put it on a tow truck and get it taken there.
Is there an option to do that in the VW software ? because yes that's what you need to do to make it a 'virgin' again
We only did it for the purposes of testing.
Existing ECU went bang (Wouldn't start, was logging G28 engine speed sensor failure codes, even with new G28 sensor and bypassed wiring), so we borrowed another one, adapted the immobiliser to it (easy enough to do, no secret passwords or anything), hit the key, and away it went. Naturally, we swapped it back to the car it came from, and ordered a new ECU.
My thoughts are, that the VIN is stored in the immobiliser, since you need an online connection to Germany to play with that.
Harley, if you can get hold of someone with VCDS or VAS-PC, try adapting the ECU to the immobiliser yourself at home. I can't recall how to do it with VCDS, but with VAS-PC, it's pretty straight-forward.

Interesting. So are you essentially entering the VIN into the ECU via VCDS or VAS-PC? Would be nice if that was the case, because most of the cost is going to be in towing to VW + then getting them to do it.
Unfortunately I've just moved to Melbourne and don't know anyone down here with one.
vin is stored in the dash and the ECU and to modify anything here you need the 7 digit code from VW - which they can't see anymore and you need the online connection
There are other options you can buy to do this for you if your a company but the price isn't worth it unless your doing it frequently
- ie a close mate of second hand cars dealers etc
They only want $175 to do it so it's not too bad at all. My only concern was that they couldn't do a second hand ecu, but this doesn't seem to be a concern anymore.

I'm of the impression that adapting the ECU to the immobiliser is transferring the VIN over from the immobiliser anyway.
As I said, no online connection to adapt an ECU to the immobiliser. Only time you need an online connection these days for the ECU is to do a software update.

I might have to try this when I get some time. I have some spare ECU's for my own car which I can easily restore if need be.
In the continuing saga, the VW dealership called me today, the day before it's booked in, two weeks after I booked it, to tell me the foreman is now having concerns about doing it and how they're very busy and couldn't really afford to spend time looking at it if it's not just a simple recode. They're saying they are now also having issues about it being a second hand ECU.
The strong impression I got from them, was that they're just too busy, and don't want to spend time looking into it. I've pushed the point, that I was told by them it could be done, and why the sudden change in thoughts, and I'm awaiting a call back.
Trying to think of next option if they can't/won't do it.
