Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MkV GTI - 3 Years Old - Extended Warranty etc

Well I cant believe it but in a few weeks i would have had my GTI for 3 years!!!! It was my daily to work (Polo GTI's turn now) for a long time (hence the kms) and has now been retired to weekend cruising and shopping trips
    • Jan 05 Build Date
    • Reflex Silver
    • 5 Door
    • DSG
    • Sun Roof
    • Kilts for Seats
    • APR Tuned ECU
    • 18x8 Audi A8 Replicas

Its done 94,000 kms and had the following issues:
    • Air Con Compressor Failed (Replaced Under Warranty)
    • Internal Alarm Switch Broken (Replaced Under Warranty)
    • Rear Seat Trim Cracked in Rear Seats on Both Sides (Replaced Under Warranty)
    • Few Blown Bulbs

    Not too bad really...!

I went and sorted out my extended warranty on the weekend as i plan on keeping the car for a couple more years...have gone through the contract and it is basically a 2 Year direct extension of the Factory Warranty, no "oh your only covered if..." or "we only replace that on a blue moon..." and am pretty happy with the price...

So after this bit of nostalgia (sorry)...basically...i bloody love this car and still gives me a buzz driving it each time i do!!!

Which dealership did you get it from? I will be internested in it as well, but my dealership were pushing their own warrantee which wasn't very appealing.

Are you prepared to post roughly the cost of said warranty? I was thinking similar for my 8/05 Comfortline 2.0FSI.

If the central locking motor goes that's $1000. If your timing belt goes that's $4000. They are common VW problems.

Also, people are reporting air conditioner compressors going on the MK5, plus other expensive common problems.

Yep, my air con comp went, isn't just the compressor that needs Replacing, TX Valve, Seals + a fair amount of labour.

I would consider a warranty on it - only because of the kms even though Ive read theyre generally a waste of time by other users on vw forums . The 2 things I would worry about are engine issues and the dsg. How long are dsg boxes designed to last? I wonder what the dollars are to repair one. I would say taking it to a specialist would be way cheaper than vw.

I think the consensus has been that the extended factory warrantees are ok - the dealer warrantees are a waste of time

I paid $1000 for the 2 years extended warranty for the Passat and got it free for the EOS. Both VW extended warranty not from the dealer. Thats from Chatswood VW.
