  • I have a problem!

So what I want it a gti mk5 but because of Vic roads crap I can't due to the power to weight ratio.
I was wondering is there a way around it, and I want to drive the car on my terms not there's.. Don't think I have many options.

Or i was looking at a golf mk5 2.0 but I was wondering what can you do to them to improve performance..?
    Any help would be great

Don't you fall under this category?

Lower performance turbo or supercharged vehicles : VicRoads

you should be able to apply for an exemption

2.0 NA is a waste of time trying to improve. It would be the most boring engine in the range IMO.

Either try for a Jetta 147kw with exemption or get a GTD or Golf Sport in either Petrol twincharger (with exemption) or Diesel.

Skoda Octavia RS also has the 147kw but needs exemption. The diesel is approved.

I'm not sure about VIC but in NSW you are more likely to get approval if it's "the only family car for use of all members" and I seem to recall if the car is registered to a business or has an ABN associated with it then there's no P-Plate restriction. Worth investigating.

Personally, I'd just go for a diesel & do a few mods to get the most out of it.

              You've dealt with NSW RMS?

At this point everyone has given you some suggestions that might work. It's pretty pointless aiming for a vehicle with a big red BANNED label on it.

This is as close as you'll get without faffing about getting approval.
Golf Sport Diesel 125kw /350Nm Not bad value when you consider they were selling for around $37k IIRC.

Golf Sport Twincharger are pretty good too and there's a chance of approval. 120kw/250Nm IIRC

I personally think the diesel is more tuneable but there's plenty of fun in both for a P-Plater. Have you actuallu driven a MkV GTI. There's a reason why they are banned for inexperienced drivers.

                Thanks brad,

No I have but dad use to work for vw so his strongly advised me to stay away.
But I've always wanted one which is the main reason.

                But thanks for everyone's advise

I'm not gonna be popular for saying this, buts here's an idea. Don't try and buy a car now that you're not allowed to. Instead wait, cruise around in something cheap, can still be cool and buy a Golf GTI when you're off P's. By then I'm sure you'll get a newer one anyway.

I drove a Suzuki Swift Gti and a 4AGE Corrolla when I was your age. Way harder to kill yourself too

Why not get a R32 Golf V? No turbos or superchargers.

Get MK5 2.0TDI you'll be happy with the performance and if not you could always improve it. Plus, you get a very good fuel economy especially in the city.

Hate to rain on your parade but if you read the VicRoads website on P restrictions:

"has an engine that has been modified to increase the vehicle's performance (other than a modification made by the manufacturer in the course of the manufacture of the vehicle"

So no mods. Find a stock vehicle you can live with.

Mazda MX5s are mega-cheap ($6k for something quite serviceable with a good body), reliable & easy to get parts for & cheap. They are also a hoot to drive. That's what I'd be aiming for.
