Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Wheel Help MkV GTI

hi all, my son is in the middle of buying a MkV GTI and he is looking to put some after-market rims on it.

Can anyone advise what the OEM details are, I presume 5x112, 17" but what is the width and offset?

If he wants to go up to 18" or 19", what sort of width and offset should he be targeting?

    The Denver's are 17x7 ET51 and run 225-45/17 tyres.
I am pretty sure there is a wheel thread in the Mk5 section that you could use to see what size is suitable for an upgrade (noting that people have different limits to what is tolerable/legal)

thanks, seems that 235/40 on 18x8 ET45 is a bit popular, but couldnt find a lot on it

That would need some guard work. 8.5 ET 45 would be a better fit...

I've got a set of these if your son is interested

There's some R36 Omanyts for sale on here 18x8 +44 that would be a great fit and look. Give room for a good drop in ride height too

Centre Bore (CB) on the Mk 5 hub is 57.1 I believe those wheels are 66.6 you may require hub rings

                      tyre question!

the seller of the rims is advising that the best size is 225/35/19 on 8.5" rims, "due to a small risk on inside rubbing, on full lock, over bumps".

however, a local tyre fitter is advising that 235/35/19 is the correct upsize.

any one had any issues with either of those sizes?

also looking at getting the Goodyear Asymmetric 2s which I know has a decent size rim protector on it, so should I err conservatively and fit the 225?

The 235 will fit and is on most vehicles the correct size for 8.5" but on a GTI with lower ride height than the standard Golf some rubbing will happen, if the vehicle has passagers rubbing will happen more often. In my opinion 225 is the safe option and even then fully laddened some rubbing over bad surfaces will occur.

I have 235/40 on my MKV GTI. They fit great but I notice that if I go too fast over a speed hump or around a corner then rubbing does occur. Not enough to bother me though

I also have the Goodyear A2's. With these tyres along with the 235 size, all my previous wheelspin problems are now gone. Highly recommended!

Hey guys, don't mean to hijack, but figure this question is in line.
I'm a complete noob regarding wheel fitment, so would these fit my Gti?

She is running stock everything. Thanks!
