  • My car shudders to life

    Hi guys,

So my 2009 tdi Pacific golf shuddered to life yesterday. I thought it wouldn't even start (it was very rough and thought it would conk out).

The shuddering happened for a few second and then the car was perfect and idled nicely plus drove beautifully as always.

Just wondering what might be the cause or is this normal and I've only just realised?

    Thanks

This morning it started fine but this afternoon it was all rough again.

I'll check out the battery, thanks.

Do you know what's wrong with it?
Or do you just let it happen and everything is fine?

If its not your battery then the DMF may be at fault, but you'd have to get it professionally looked at buddy.

Have you been experiencing 'hard starting' lately? / Longer than normal to start/turn over.

I'm not too concerned by it. It's the first diesel that we have had and my wife drives it. I have found that I just have to force myself to pause between on and crank. If I do it usually starts better. Alternatively if I forget to do that I just hold it on crank for a second or so after it fires, otherwise it will conk out. My wife doesn't seem concerned or have too many worries about it. Ours has 135,000k's on it and otherwise drives fine with excellent economy.

                Thanks guys.

I'll check the battery first, keep it on crank a bit longer and go from there!

Could be a fuel priming,or maybe a glow plug issue.
The opening of the door is the trigger for the fuel pump to prime, and the door switches are know to be issue in these cars.

The priming pump known as a low pressure pump is separate to the main pump, maybe the low pressure pump is on the way out ?

So go open the driver's door, do the cabin lights come on, does the red light in the door light up ?
Since it is a diesel does it need time for glow plugs to warm up ? What triggers the start of this ?

                    Thanks for all the advice.

It turn out (please excuse m very lame terms) after the coil light goes off and the key turns further, I keep it in that position (i'm use to an old bug with issues). So I've taken note and care of how I am with the ignition.

                    Thanks again

If you have any further problems with the same symptoms, then odds are you're up for a new starter motor. I've fitted one to a Mk5 TDi with the same issues (rough starting, actually stalled completely while idling multiple times) and it fixed them completely.

Our only problem with our Golf of the same vintage was the starter motor / alternator which failed. It occurred early and was under warranty. Dealer said it was the first case in six years. We have had no other problems.

When a diesel VW starting is long, then you would definitely need a new starter.
Why? It's because on ECU they have software made so, when engine temp in higher than 70C, it needs at least 250rpm to start injecting.
I've worked with some software and tweaking them, so i know what I'm talking.

How do you mean starting is long mine fires quickly when warm but with a nasty shudder
