Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. • Which Golf to buy?

Going to buy my brother a Golf.

I am trying to decide which one to get him.

Golf Pacific edition supposed to be new golf package with lots of features that have become standard on there. Like the handling etc but just feels like its missing something to the GT version.

Goft GT will cost more but I feel it looks better and has better performance for a 21 year old Loved it when I test drove it.

Anyone know more about the pacifics if they are worth getting or just grab a GT?

If go for the GT would it be better in Petrol or Diesel.

    Easy answer- get a GTI

Otherwise if that was out of the question my money would be spent on a GT TSI...

Has anyone else heard of PACFIC edition? What price where you quoted and by which dealer?

Insurance can be a determining factor if he is 21...

i'm a youngen like yourself and have a gt tdi. its heaps of fun and the power is relentless but its not a screamer, like someone else said have a good look at the gti you could probably get a 3dr in manual for 40k on road?? but yes... definitely go for gt or gti the others just arent quick enough

If insurance is a factor then stay away from the GT FSI, insurance for that is more than the GTI.
          Not sure about the diesel

Can't comment on the Pacific, but it comes down to the price difference, and if the extra is worth it for you ( and your brother! ).

            I think at 21 he'd want a GT somehow!

To me, the TSI was high tech, and felt quite smooth. Good power everywhere, both economy AND power. Great bragging rights at the pub, and some good tuning options for down the track. Downside for me was it was kinda "too smooth" and felt more Honda accord..not at all bad, but just a bit too "normal" to drive compared to the TDI and the ever popular GTI rocket. I'd still be very very happy in one, and the idea of a supercharger...Mad Max look out I can see why people like them.

The Diesel was a torque monster. Coming from a V8, it just felt "better". In the manual I ended up with, there's the very obvious turbo lag, very abrupt boost, rattly engine, and short gear changes. The plus is amazing economy, an absloute ball in the mountains, and for me, the simple fact I now want to drive everywhere cause it simply doesn't cost much to do so. That's a big thing for me.

I think in the end...he's a damn lucky brother! Good for you

Want to adopt another brother from another mother?

I'll take a red 3 door GTI also thanks

Jokes aside - Out of the Mk5 range I think I'd take the GT TDI as a personal prefrence. It might not be as quick as the GTI but the advantages of it far out weigh it IMO.

                              It really makes no difference.
